Depends on what type of crime honestly. The first thing that comes to mind though is realistic shoot outs. I want the bullets to actually mean something in context to the picture. It’s one of the things that I loved about Reservoir Dogs.
“what makes a great crime film. "
1. Crime
My favourite crime movie type quite falls in slasher/whodunit territory
- Killings should take place on screen, on present time
- Killings shouldn’t be a imaginations (due to psychological problems) or dreams
- Killer must be human, not some kind of monster, machine, zombie or something
- Killer’s (or killers’) identity should be hidden until the end
- Killer must be one of the main characters in movie
- Killings must take place within few hours, at the same time where main characters are gathered at the same place
- None, or minimum police/dedective presence
The main criteria for me is realism. If I watch a crime film and the characters don’t talk and behave like real criminals and cops do, it takes me out of the film real quick.

I would be interested to hear your take on what makes a great crime film. There are so many different films you all know, from The Godfather to Pulp Fiction, or series like The Sopranos or Breaking Bad; but what elements catch your attention most? From lighting to music to the story.
Very interested!
