Not sure yet. I just usually wait and see what comes out.
Inglourious Basterds looks so meh. “I want me ma scalps!” Get out of here, is Tarantino writing his scripts with the help of 11th graders now? Here’s a good idea for a war movie, send in 8 dudes to go scalping! Oooooh! The trailer just tried way to hard to make you get excited about it. That’s not to say that I don’t hope it’s good, I really do.
I’m a big fan of Tarantinos but Inglorious Basterds does not have me geeked.
Public Enemies by Michael Mann
Duplicity by Tony Gilroy
Shutter Island, The Soloist, The Road, Nine (if only because I have a hard-on for DDL), Watchmen (purely out of curiosity as to was kept/lost), Sunshine Cleaning looks funny, Earth, HBP, Public Enemies and Inglorious Basterds.
Michael Mann’s Public Enemies is at the top of my list.
I am counting down the days till Shutter Island. Also praying Tetro is great. Please Coppola give us one more masterpiece!!!!
Tree of Life (Malick)
i’m having a moment of deja vu.
Looks like shutter Island, Tetro and over-the-top Inglorious Basterds are favorites….I am in too…
Tree of Life, Shutter Island, Public Enemies
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
I was in Tokyo on business a month ago. I managed to catch Scorsese during filming of his new movie. It looked from the costumes like he was doing a period piece, exploring some obscure mafia-Samurai connection. Looked very cool and it was great to see De Niro and Scorsese working together again.
Or did I dream that?
On another note; it’s great to see Malick back in action so soon after The New World.
Gomorrah
Shutter Island (Scorsese + Von Sydow.. .yum!)
Tree of Life (Malick is always wonderful)
and I’m hoping Claire Denis’s 35 Shots of Rum gets a US release date for this year. I have been jonesing for some new Claire Denis.
Broken Embraces by Almodovar
Yes, I’d agree about Tarantino being the shit, but probably not in the sense that Jake means.
Looking forward to TREE OF LIFE, I guess.
Edit: well, I was looking forward to TREE OF LIFE until I saw that Brad Pitt was in it.
IAMPISTOL-Scorcese is filming Silence in Japan with Daniel Day-Lewis and Bernicio del Toro-De Niro isn’t listed as being involved.
Todd Solondz’ Forgiveness…….. has clear signs of being a masterwork.
Tree of Life, most definitely.
Observe and Report…. I think Jody Hill is going to be a very special filmmaker, and this looks funny as hell.
Public Enemies… has the possibility of being stupid, but I’ll see anything by Michael Mann at this point.
Where the Wild Things Are ….. high hopes mixed with low expectations.
And a bit of schadenfreude: I am looking forward to seeing Inglorious Basterds…. because, if the trailer is any indication, this will be the movie that offers undeniable proof that Quentin Tarantino’s films have been worthless garbage since Jackie Brown. Using the plight of the Jews during WWII to justify excessive bloodletting is childish and disingenuous. Other adjectives do come to mind, but I’ll shut up now.
Perhaps Wes Anderson will be rebound with Fantastic Mr. Fox?
Patrick-Is that the same Jody Hill who directed the unfunny Foot Fist Way?
Did anyone else notice that there are two films coming out next year called Nine. One is a Tim Burton produced animated flick and the other a musical, and one’s called Nine and the other 9. Does this bother anyone else?
A stage musical (a ______ musical! ) travesty of 8 1/2 is bad enough, but to make it a film?
Edit: Yes Jake, it bothers me. It bothers me in more than one way….
I’ve been waiting too long for “Fantastic Mr. Fox”. Wes Anderson will deliver like he always does. I’m also looking forward to Jarmusch’s new film, which is supposed to show up this year. Also, while I think it’s cinematic blasphemy to try any kind of “8 1/2” remake, I’m interested to see what Daniel Day Lewis will do (and Penelope Cruz).
Yes, Steve, that would be the same Jody Hill. I’m a sucker for Danny McBride…. currently the only actor that can make me see a film I wouldn’t otherwise bother with by virtue of his presence. To my way of thinking, he was the best part of Tropic Thunder.
For a low budget comedy…. Foot Fist Way definitely had a strong tone and experimental vibe in some scenes. Say what you will, but it was most definitely not the regular Apatow “place the camera wherever and let them improv” strategy. He’s a real filmmaker. The trailer for Observe and Report looks hysterical.
I’m such a college kid for saying this, but “Watchmen”
@ STEVE OERKFITZ – I was joking actually (sort of fantasizing aloud), but thanks for replying because I had no idea he’s filming another movie with Daniel Day-Lewis, in Japan. Great news!
ps – I changed my user name to an anagram of my real one
Rory, as far as WATCHMEN is concerned, Snyder has said that the DVD/BLURAY versions will be multiple in number so don’t expect the complete film in the theaters (even with a 2 hrs35min run time). The ultimate version will be closer to 3hrs30mins on DVD.
this from Bill Hunt at DIGITAL BITS:“Watchmen director Zach Snyder said that when the film comes to DVD and Blu-ray later this year, you’ll get a couple of versions. In addition to the theatrical cut which clocks in at 2 hours and 36 minutes, there will be a director’s cut that runs 3 hours and 10 minutes, plus an even longer 3 hour and 25 minute version that incorporates the Tales of the Black Freighter footage.”
Thanks Mark, I didn’t know that. I knew he was going to have to have some sort of director’s cut, I just wasn’t expecting a 3 1/2 hour one.
@ Marko – The Nine film is based off of a musical that was was ‘inspired’ by 8 1/2…I still see your concern, but think of it as a translation of the musical as opposed to a direct remake.
I just heard Todd Field is signed to make Cormac McCarthy’s BLOOD MERIDIAN. Yeah, I’m stoked.
Marko – I saw ‘9 – The Musical’ twice on B’way; the original cast in 1982 w/ Raul Julia, and the revival a few years ago with Antonio Banderas. Musicals are admittedly NOT my form, and I usually rail against turning every original story into them, but I will tell you this one really isn’t all that bad. I just hope the film turns out to be worthy of both the cleverness of the stage play and the glory of the source material, considering who is directing.
The Limits Of Control (Jim Jarmusch)
The Girlfriend Experience (Steven Soderbergh)
Socialisme (Jean-Luc Godard)
The Tree of Life (Terrence Malick)
The Brothers Bloom (Rian Johnson)
Antichrist (Lars Von Trier)
For now…
Jake Howell
The new trailer has recently come out for Inglorious Basterds. I don’t care what anybody says, Tarantino is the shit.
Also I’m excited about The Road, which should have come out last year, Where the Wild Things Are and Antichrist, the new Lars Von Trier which I think comes out this year.
