1. Where the Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze)
2. The Road (John Hillcoat)
3. Broken Embraces (Pedro Almodovar)
4. Antichrist (Lars Von Trier)
5. Inglorious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino)
Well, “The Tree Of Life” looks like 2010 at the earliest, so I could say Von Trier or Haneke or Mann just to sound all auteur-oriented, but, honestly, the film I am singularly interested to see is “Avatar”(none of you guys have mentioned this one- why?). And, say what you like, and I am not what you’d call a fan of his, by any means, but is Cameron not an auteur? We’re not really gonna have that discussion, are we? This one has my inner geek fully stoked.
Rivette’s 36 vues du Pic Saint-Loup and Resnais’ Les herbes folles. These guys may be in their 80s but are still making the most interesting stuff out there as far as I’m concerned.
@KJ
As much as i have had problems with Cameron’s earlier films, he really seems to be ahead of the curve with Avatar. There are a lot of big names (Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Soderbergh, etc.) that have called his methods of direction in Avatar “the future of film-making.”
So, needless to say, I’m excited to see how the final product turns out.
Shutter Island (Scorsese)
The Road (Hillcoat)
Public Enemies (Mann)
The Lovely Bones (Jackson)
A Serious Man (The Coen Brothers)
The Human Experience (Eastwood)
Inglorious Basterds (Tarantino)
What A Great Year for Great Directors…. we are a PT Anderson film away from perfection

Where the Wild Things Are
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Wow, you guys know a lot about upcoming releases. I was going to say the remake of Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 looks like it might be fun, but now I want to see Resnais, Rivette, Haneke, Kiarostami, Godard… what a great year it looks like.
There’s a bunch but if someone said I could pick three movies coming out this year and see them tomorrow, I’d probably pick
Where the Wild Things Are, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Funny People.
The Tree of Life would be number one but I’m pretty sure it’s going to come out in 2010.
I am so geeking out on the “District 9” trailer and website (boss!).

Those are my very limited predictions, based solely on the directors & casts, of what maybe my top ten films of 2009
I am very disappointed that Tree of Life was moved to 2010.
I really am looking forward to Godard’s Socialsme, but I have my doubts that we’ll see it in 2009. Knowing Godard’s habit of working extremely slowly in the last decade (a vast change certainly from his 60s pace- must be age of course) who knows if we’ll see it by 2012 no less 2009?!?
Where The Wild Things Are
Tetro
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Up!
MAYBE the Brothers Bloom
Moon
The Limits of Control
Oh yeah District 9
and Avatar doesn’t come out till 2010 (the future!)
Tree of Life
Public Enemies
Terminator Salvation
Forgiveness
High School Musical 4
Lemon Tree

From the trailers and early buzz from sundance, MOON looks like it could end up as one of the best films of the year, and it will be playing at the Seattle International Film Festival (along with TETRO) in 3 weeks!
CAN’T WAIT!
Splice, I tell you! SPLICE!!!

PARADIES by Ulrich Seidl
It’s easy to get hyped for a new year of movies, and then even easier to be dissapointed by most of them. I’m hoping for great things from Tree of Life, Antichrist, Prophet, Enter the Void, Where the Wild Things Are (this is bound to become a cult film), and Looking for Eric. I’m willing to bet the one that interests me the least now will be my favorite. Like The Lovely Bones, or Bright Star.
woah, wait, there’s a new godard movie?
Tree of Life – seens I’m as anxious as everyone of you, but I tought it would be release in 2010!
Where the Wild Things Are – Jonze, tell me you will not destroy this. Please.
Tetro – Because I do hape hope :P
The Limits Of Control – Because Jarmush never fails on me
