What Film Are You Most Looking Forward To In 2009?

Elmen Tsarukyan

Top pick: The Road

Also: The Girlfriend Experience, Public Enemies, The Brothers Bloom (Brick was fantastic), Harry Potter

I was initially excited about the new Jarmusch movie, until I heard it sucks a lot. I’ll probably give it a try.

Really? We must be looking at two different things.

Antichrist and Nine. I cannot tell you the chills I had when I finally saw the Nine trailer on a big screen, my mind just absolutely blown away. Of course, there are a few other films (Inglourious Basterds, etc.), but those two are my biggest concernes right now.

Then, though, sadly, apparently Antichrist is getting cut down for an R rating when it hits the states (save, perhaps, in LA and New York), and so that pisses me off. I want to see it in its full-fledged, psychotic, despairing (to borrow from Roger Ebert) glory, as it would have been seen at Cannes. And, if yit does not come out on DVD and Bluray in that form, well – I certaily wont be able to do anything about it, but I most certainly will not be pleased by IFC’s decision.

Oh, yeah, forgot The Tree of Life. Seeing an actual Malick film in theaters would make my day heaven.

And Moon and Tetro. I hate the fact that they’re not playing anywhere around Texas.

JAKE, yeah, there’s really not much there that excites me here. What are you looking at?

If you look at what people were picking at the top of the year, very few of the films turned out to be that good (Public Enemies, for example, or Watchmen – my worst film of 2009 right now). Drag Me to Hell was a nice little genre film but not worth getting excited about. The Limits of Control turned out to be Jarmusch’s worst film.

As to future releases, I’m as curious to see Where the Wild Things Are as anyone else but I think it’s more likely to be a disaster than a great film. I’ll also see Antichrist but I can’t say the film looks very good. I hated the novel The Lovely Bones so I’m not looking forward to the film. I hated Chicago so I’m not lookingfoward to Nine. I wonder why the Road was delayed a year and have a feeling the book is largely unadaptable (I wasn’t a big fan of the Proposition either). I don’t think Coppolla is making a good, not even great, film anymore so Tetro doesn’t do it for me either. And I don’t think Tarantino is capable of making anything even halfway decent these days so I’m not going to rush out to see Inglorious Basterds. And don’t get me started on Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.

I’d say I’m excited for Tree of Life but it’s coming out in 2010.

I am excited for The White Ribbon, I’ll admit.

Ah, see, that’s where we differ. Watchmen is one of my faves thus far this year. I guess it’s all in taste.

May have been out in places around the world prior to 2009 but Erik Poppes “DeUsynlige” was absolute bliss, never ever felt so bad after leaving a screening. I’m looking forward to owning that on dvd and feeling bad in the privacy of my own home.

Other than that – zilch.
