Breathless
Fight Club
The collected work of David Lynch
This is a great topic. Very glad to see I’m not the only one willing to acknowledge the crappiness of most of these titles. I don’t even know where to begin, but this year I’d say I feel in the minority as a Slumdog Millionaire detractor. Same goes for The Dark Knight – I honestly feel like there’s some kind of collective madness going on in the major national year-end lists based on how many #1 placements it’s gotten.
But in the company of people whose opinions I generally respect, I get the most shit for not liking Harmony Korine, PT Anderson (except Punch-Drunk Love) and Matthew Barney.
Ah there we go, Punch Drunk Love. Ugh. But I agree with Manfred re: Korine & Barney.
Pretty much any movie that won an Oscar for Best Picture in the last 10-15 years…I didn’t like.
Anything by PT Anderson, Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen. What´s so great about these guys I´ll never know. Sure they´re decent, even good, but hardly great. And I´ll throw in Crash for good measure. Truly awful!
Scarface
Oh yeah, I totally forgot Donnie Darko! What an utter piece of useless slime. There are actually people who believe this is “intelligent” cinema…
V for Vendetta
Sin City (It’s alright.)
I guess I need to read the books to know.
Requiem for a Dream
Step Brothers
Tropic Thunder
Wedding Crashers
As you can tell, I don’t exactly have friends that like cinema as much as I do. Plus, they seem to think every comedy movie is funny no matter how unfunny it is.
Tarkovsky’s The Mirror is breathtaking at moments, but it’s just too much for me. I don’t speak Russian, so I find myself trying to read the film’s densely poetic narration while taking in the imagery. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work.
Despite a really great ending, I was pretty underwhelmed with Bresson’s Mouchette.
I think Diary of a Chamber Maid is just stupid.
Smiles of a Summer Night is nothing special.
It takes no guts whatsoever to dismiss popular Hollywood films. Try to tell someone you don’t like works by Bergman, Bresson, Buñuel (the killer B’s) and Tarkovsky and you they’re likely to suspect you don’t “get” them. So, I have guts! ;-P
Oh God, anything by Pedro Almodovar or Sofia Coppola. I actually felt homicidal during that whole “Lost in Translation” mania. Ditto “Elephant” by Gus Van Sant. Oh, and “Deathproof”: self-indulgent meta-Tarantino, who I otherwise enjoy most of the time.
The Departed was fucking awful.
Donnie Darko
I get the gears for not liking Punch Drunk Love from my cinephile friends, and from everybody else I get it for HATING Forest Gump. Ohmygodicannotsitthroughthatmovie. ohmygodit’sontvagainiwanttodie.
(I will now add sheepishly that I actually liked Donnie Darko. And The Departed.)
Donnie Darko.
Mulholland Drive I’ve never got so much shit for hating this movie. Also the Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Eyes Wide Shut, Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction and Donnie Darko.
People get on me for not liking Yasujiro Ozu.
Someone got really pissed when I said the original Star Wars Trilogy was better than the Lord Of The Rings
I hate Donnie Darko and no one has given me shit about it. And they probably wont either because everyone that I know who like that film are a bunch of fake art film ass kissers. But their extent of their artsy film viewing goes as far as Juno or Little Miss Sunshine so they really have no idea what they’re talking about.
I like Donnie Darko and I’m not a fake art film ass kisser. I think the acting is kind of crap (Drew Barrymore as the teacher?), but I like the story and the music is really good. I think it’s fun.
Fight Club may be my favorite film ever.
I mostly have gotten shit on for not liking 300 and Transformers. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like several notable movies but I haven’t got an flack for them. I am disturbed though by the people in this thread calling films bad just because they don’t like them. I don’t like Ghostbusters for example, but I understand that it’s not a bad film, just not for my tastes.
The Blues Brothers. The last 10-15 minutes were OK, but beyond that, I was not impressed. Maybe it will grow on me.
Almost anything that obviously uses CGI.
I caught shit today for saying I didn’t like A CHRISTMAS STORY (I actually loved it when I was a kid and my family is obsessed with it, but I seem to have lost whatever I felt for it).
Kids, American Beauty and Labyrinth are three that come to mind.
Man, I can’t believe how many people make it a point to proclaim their distaste for Donnie Darko.
I love that movie! It combines a dreamy teenage quality with a teenage angst motif and throws in a bit of tongue-in-cheek sci-fi to fit it all together. I particularly loved the holloween party scene with Joy Division playing in the background. It worked for me.
Julian Donkey-Boy.
Dancer in the Dark.
Brakhage.
Hour of the Wolf. The Magician.
I can’t stand Boondock Saints.
Donnie Darko is crap.
I also think Fight Club isn’t all that its cracked up to be.
Those seem to be the main ones that I get shit for not liking.
Oh man, I totally read this wrong. I like the films that I have previously listed. I get shit for not liking Blow up. I think that film is shit.
Boondock Fucking Saints. Why are people so obsessed with this movie!
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl
M.Wood.
Oldboy is another film that most people seem to go apeshit over. It was decent, but nowhere near as great as many have blown it up to be.
