WHAT FILMS NEED THE TREATMENT?

Joriah Goad

So this is sure to get some activity, I am very curious to know what films you would all like to see released through the Criterion Collection. I’ve listed my top 15 that I feel deserve the treatment- some mainly just for a wider audience, as well as better tranfers and special features, and others just for high def transfers and special features.

Wings of Desire (1987)- Wim Wenders
Paris, Texas (1984)- Wim Wenders
Badlands (1973)- Terrence Malick
Delicatessen (1991)- Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Belle De Jour (1968)- Luis Bunuel
Jalsaghar (The Music Room) (1958)- Satyajit Ray
My Life to Live (1962)- Jean-Luc Godard
Landscape in the Mist (1988)- Theodorus Angelopoulos
Eternity and a Day (1998)- Theodorus Angelopoulos
The Little Fugitive (1953)- Ray Ashley
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)- Sam Peckinpah
Sleuth (1972)- Joseph L. Mankiewicz
The Entertainer (1960)- Tony Richardson
Taxi Driver (1976)- Martin Scorsese
Paper Moon (1973)- Peter Bogdanovich

What are your top films that deserve the treatment?

Here’s what I’d like to see added:

Tim Burton’s “Big Fish” (2003)
Massimo Pupillo’s "Bloody Pit of Horror” (1965)
Roger Corman’s “A Bucket of Blood” (1959)
Brian De Palma’s “Carrie” (1976)
Danny DeVito’s “Duplex” (2003)
Tim Burton’s "Ed Wood” (1994)
Tom Gries’ “Helter Skelter” (1976)
John McNaughton’s “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” (1986)
Roger Corman’s “Little Shop of Horrors” (1960)
Kevin Connor’s “Motel Hell” (1980)
Brian De Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise” (1974)
Lee H. Katzin’s “What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?” (1969)
Robert Aldrich’s “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” (1962)
James Cox’s “Wonderland” (2003)

I’m sure I will be adding to this list in the future!

CONTOUR (2006) – I have said it before and I will say it again, CONTOUR IS THE BEST ACTION MOVIE TO EVER BE MADE INSIDE THE UNITED STATES

I have posted a link to the trailer before and I will post it again:

Orson Welles’s The Trial (I am looking for a Criterion Definitive Edition DVD, with all of the extras of the French 2-disc release along with Welles’s documentary ‘Filming ’The Trial’’)

Bound (The Watchowski Brothers first film. The current DVD release is just plain pathetic.)

The Game (David Fincher has even said that the Criterion had a good set ready for release.)

Orson Welles dose Shakespeare – Falstaff/King Lear/Macbeth/Othello/Filming ‘Othello’ (this would make a great ECLIPSE release)

Some more Welles – David and Goliath/The Stranger/Lady of Shanghai (another ECLIPSE release)

The brilliant, shattering “The Mother and the Whore.” To be honest, I’d just like to see any DVD release of it (I know there’s been a presumably OOP Japanese edition), but certainly it is ripe for Criterion? AFAIK, Jean Eustache’s children own the rights to this, so it’d be good if the CC folks could negotiate with them.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle(great Robert Mitchum role)-still never released on DVD

Pretty much anything by Satyajit Ray, but I have this one particular fantasy of a “Calcutta Trilogy” box set including Pratidwandi, Seemabaddha, and Jana Aranya.

Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire are supposed to happen. I was really hoping for them to be in the April announcements. I’ll be really disappointed if they don’t come out this year. They’re both out of print as far as I know.

Any chance of The American Friend too?

- The Horse Thief w/ at least Martin Scorsese commentary.
- The Devils. Come on. Someone release the ultimate nunsploitation movie uncut w/ film scholar and Ken Russell commentary.
- Excalibur. a lot of deleted scenes worth finding, an actual dolby track recorded at the time of making, and a decent transfer of the film (original aspect ratio. no cut heads like on the dvd or feet on the laserdisc) would be appreciated I read that all of the cut stuff is somewhere at Warner Bros and the soundtrack is in a shoebox in Boorman’s basement. I also want a Rospo Pallenberg commentary, and a Arthurian studies person to explain how it all works, how Boorman made Arthur the focus of everything, etc.
- Lancelot du Lac.

Thank God a few of you seriously put thought into it without writing (forgive me) what I like to call dirty words on the bathroom wall (some of the mentioned films make me question how serious some of you are, not that it really matters, but I would like to hear of titles that really haven’t seen as much of the light of day as they should) The American Friend is another fantastic Wim Wenders film, maybe a three disc set like Hiroshi Teshigahar’s box set, I was so happy when they released Woman in the Dunes, that was up for like $200 on Amazon because it was out of print. I would love to see The Devils as well, completely agree that anything they can dig up of Satyajit Ray would be great considering the limited supply of films coming out of India, Los Olvidados would have been the first Bunuel film I would have chosen simply because the only print seems to be a washed out VHS transfer, where as Belle De Jour was released with a decent print with the help of Martin Scorsese. Red Desert as well, and I have always wanted to see The Dead, I may have seen it awhile back but can’t remember it. Un Flic should be coming, it has Criterion written all over it. I am also excited to hear that Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas are finally getting their wings, I can’t wait.

Joriah Goad

Shotzi, how do you find out what titles they are “hopefully” releasing? I was trying to find information even futuristically hoping for it and I couldn’t find any.

Seriously, Shotzi, where did you read/hear that Paris, Texas is going to be released by Criterion? I’m not doubting you, necessarily, I just wanted some assurance because I have been eyeing an expensive used copy.

There are no-frills “classic” editions of “Wings of Desire” and “Paris, Texas” for under $20 here in Canada. Last time I checked, a few months ago anyway.

Two films:

“Pink Floyd: The Wall.” The mad imagery would really come to life in Blu-Ray. And the original DVD issue was not that fantastic, especially with the wow on the soundtrack at the end of the last reel, where they were playing the beautiful horn/choir rendition of ’Outside the Wall."

And this one: Bondarchuk’s “War and Peace.” this could conceivably be the one Criterion release that would need the help of US Airborne Rangers to do it right. Apparently, the original 65/70mm work parts/negatives of the film are locked up somewhere in (I think) the Ukraine because of some copyright dispute (If this has changed since, all for the better.) But suffice to say, W & P in Blu-Ray, off 70mm and having been made love to by Criterion, should be….well, stunning. The film is well worth the restoration, for its scale and old-fashioned production values.

The Night of the Hunter would actually be a great add on, the MGM copy I’ve got is okay but it really makes it feel like a cheap film when it is so much more. If they can release The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, there is no excuse, that’s been a $5 DVD since it was released some odd years ago and now Criterion is releasing it for what $30? I don’t know about the special features, but there are plenty films that I would consider far more valuable. I highly doubt that Night of the Hunter would have too many hoops to jump through to get permission (but who knows some titles you would never expect so much of a hassle from).

Killer of Sheep.
And really, the entire Kubrick catalogue should be in Criterion.
Also, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, maybe? It was the genesis of modern American horror, after all.
