Speaking of slow paced family-oriented Asian films, Yi Yi.
I think it was a really good film, but it really could have stood to be shorter.
THE HUMAN CONDITION
It took me 10 months but I finally finished it last week, and it was great!
Slow films are my passion.
@Inner Pattern – I loved Tarr’s Damnation, I feel it’s a great portrayal of loneliness and desperation, it always puts me into a suicidal mood : )
Claire’s Knee (though the pace isn’t as slow as the development is minimal.)
Solaris
Stalker. One of the greatest films ever made. But saying slow pace as if it’s a derogatory term is completely moronic (imo) if you can’t handle films with slower pace, don’t watch them. But don’t act like it’s shocking to enjoy a film that doesn’t throw a million answers at you every second. L’Avventura is another obvious example.
Of course I could mention Stalker, Jeanne Dielman, Satantango, etc, but instead I’ll mention some other slow ones I’ve seen that have yet to be mentioned:
Blissfully Yours (Weerasthakul)
Three Times (Hou Hsiao Hsien)
Taste of Cherry (Kiarostami)
The Apu Trilogy (Ray)
Inland Empire (Lynch)
Diary of a Country Priest (Bresson)
Dillinger is Dead (Ferreri)
I would also like to second Liang’s Goodbye Dragon Inn. Even though it’s not the longest out of the slow movies I’ve seen, it is, by a large margin, the slowest. Satantango and Stalker seem like Breathless compared to Goodbye Dragon Inn
In The City of Sylvia, off the top of my head. The soundscape is calming.
Inner Pattern
2001: A Space odyssey….although that’s kind of an obvious choice. Actually most these probably will.
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
There Will Be Blood-now I know the majority of you will probably disagree but I found this to be the only PTA film that has a slower pace.
Dogville
Hunger-one that could be argued that it isn’t slow. I found it a tad slow but loved it!
Werckmeister Harmonies- I have a love/hate relationship for Bela Tarr’s work. I loved Werckmeister but didn’t like Damnation at all……Not sure if I could make it through Satantango.
The White Ribbon-Again this one could be argued it isn’t slow but whatever. Regardless it’s a great film.
Nobody Knows-I do think it is a tad slow but in a good way.
Blood-By Pedro Costa….again probably one that isn’t considered slow paced but for me it was.
Tokyo Story-I may anger some people with this pick. I thought it was very slow paced….a great film though.
