What is your favorite Adam Sandler/Happy Madison production?

Adam Sandler essentially makes two types of films. Comedy and drama. Arguably, his funniest movie that I enjoyed was THE WEDDING SINGER. It was humorous, entertaining, as well as a fun blast from the past. Sandler’s best dramatic role, which those are few and far between, would be PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE by Paul Thomas Anderson. FUNNY PEOPLE is definitely in the running, but I think that P-DL had heart and was more entertaining. Lately, however, Adam’s work has become somewhat mundane and repetitive. GROWN UPS and the new one with Jennifer Aniston you see advertised on tv all the time…they just look like tired rehashes of previous films he’s already made. I like Adam Sandler films, at least I really want to like them, but my feeling is that he needs to attempt and experiment with some new directions and different types of films.

My favorite Adam Sandler film is Reign Over Me which features his best work and one of the best fantastic work by Saffron Burrows, plus it is the best film Mike Binder has made and the most sucessful film to deal with Sept 11 attacks. I guess Sandler does not produce all his movies usually only the safe ones.

My favorite of the Happy Madison films is Eight Crazy Nights, very funny songs, a nice jocular feel and suprisingly warm and heartfelt by the end.

The most underrated H.M production is Grandma’s Boy. It was barely seen at time on release but now has a cult following i think. It’s quite funny, and pretty out there at times, in a way that’s different from most comedies today. feels more like an 80’s comedy.

Little Nicky. Most Sandler films are just bad enough to be utterly boring. This falls into the so bad its good guilty pleasure area for me.

My favorite comedy of his is The Wedding Singer, my favorite film if his is Punch Drunk Love.

In general I don’t like the type of characters Sandler play. They always seem to be either ‘Loveable simpletons’ with annoying voices or sitcom-style crass male stereotypes.

Its funny that we’re talking about Sandler movies and I just caught myself watching I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY on the USA network. Not a great movie, but not the worst either. JIRIN…man, its like you’re on the exact same wavelength that I am! Wonder what other movies we have in common? DENNIS BRIAN, you know, I have REIGN OVER ME in my collection and I’ve completely forgotten about it. That was another dramatic role for Sandler…and the worst part, I haven’t even seen it since I bought it. I’m gonna have to check this one out, especially if you think its better than PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Thanks to everyone for the input. With your permission, I’m also now “following” each of you since you replied to this discussion forum. I enjoyed your thoughts on this topic and would like to see what your views are on other films. Please feel free to “follow” me and I’ll try to keep up with all of the movies I watch. Thanks! :)

Cinemablend.com is doing something similar to this right now. Each one of their writers is arguing their case for a different movie.

Funny People
The Wedding Singer
Punch-Drunk Love

Punch-Drunk Love is my personal favorite… but I grew up as a child watching Billy Maddison, Big Daddy and some of his movies like that and enjoy them all. I know they are “good” but fuck it, they are funny to me.
