By showing more about his life than his victims we can project ourselves onto the character (no choice because there’s nothing else to see) which makes us sympathize with the character. The Godfather is a perfect example. If the movie was mainly about the victims then it would be the opposite. Whichever area the documentarian or director/writer focuses on gets our sympathy.
same happened when i watched bronson, and even though it is based on a true prisoner i could not help (love is 2 strong a word here!) like the character, especially when he started 2 develop an artistic skill in prison
actually the point u make vertigo is very interesting because i now wonder why we have 2 make such a connection with the main character even if we know they are bad
A fundamental paradox of civilization: it is a tool we have created to protect ourselves from unhappiness, and yet it is our largest source of unhappiness.
This just makes me think of Drop Dead Fred:
Elizabeth: Well what about Cinderella? Remember what happened with her?
Fred: No I don’t remember what happened with her. I deliberately forgot all about her. She made me puke. I remember the ugly stepsisters, they were great.
The unhappiness to me is from narcissism because if we can’t develop enough imagination to see how we affect others and to look at what others go through it’s hard to give sympathy and we certainly won’t receive any. I also don’t think being a bleeding heart is the answer here either. I think western civilization overall (not perfect) is the best we’ve got and it is improving so we should at least not take it for granted. I’m glad I’m not starving in North Korea in a dictatorship. It can ALWAYS get worse ;)
Most of my out of control unhappiness or depression is reduced from meditation. To use concentration and more importantly mindfulness mental noting I can stop obssessive or addictive thoughts in their tracks and simply enjoy the now. If I didn’t meditate I don’t know how far my complaining and whining would go. We have to work on ourselves to present a real alternative to others so they can learn. It’s no use if I point out mistakes in others if I’m no different.
@like2sleep Another reason why some like the bad guy is because many people like to go to movies to IDENTIFY and mentally project themselves onto the characters. Those who like the bad guy and look at themselves that way, (because they feel bad bullies are powerful), enjoy those characters vicariously.
There are also other reasons why bad characters are more interesting to an audience. In many movies they are the most fleshed out characters. Heros can appear bland to some. This doesn’t have to be the case in books but in movies you have to find some film to cut to get a story down to 2 hours.
@like2sleep I haven’t seen Bronson but I know what you mean. I felt the same way about Kate Winslet’s character in The Reader yet she was a NAZI and making her illiterate was intellectually a lame excuse for her behaviour.
i just realized the topic title is wrong it must be my bad eyesight
it should say LoVe ThE bAd GuY :O)
or did some punk edit my topic title ha ha

ha ha this is supposed 2 be the world wide web!
just some girl shaking her booty by the pool.
what makes us love the booty girl :O)
This scene made me laugh:
Nicolas Cage is qwazy!
when i first saw that i thought mr herzog should have faded 2 black a bit sooner maybe at around 4:33 because it looks a bit silly if they are supposed 2 be having intercourse with her standing on both feet
having said that, i watched aguirre wrath of god the other day 4 the first time and again it has the same effect with the crazy bad guy being likeable 2 the very end
That’s what Herzog is trying to do with Nicolas Cage. He wants him to be the new Klaus Kinski. You should watch Fitzcarraldo, Burden of dreams (Fitzcarraldo documentary that is as good as the movie) and My best Fiend to get the relationship of Herzog and Kinski. Some of it is very funny.
Did you guys see Lord of War?
That has Cage in it too… and he’s not necessarily a hero goody goody but you could end up rooting for him if you watch the movie.
If he never get another Herzog/Cage it’ll be the biggest tragedy since ‘Ambersons’
We love a bad guy because he possesses the same Seven Deadly Vices that we possess: Wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.
It’s an out-in-the-open secret that most serious actors would rather play bad guys than good ones.

i use bad lieutenant (nicolas cage version) as an example…
a character who uses corrupt methods, violence etc etc is also a loved character we care about, and when we admire his ways working in his favour is it because we feel sympathy knowing he is a lost soul or are we seeing the evil in him that we secretly admire ha ha
what are your thoughts?
