What Music Video Collections and TV Shows Should Be On Criterion

Anthony N

As Far as I know there is only Belin Alexanderplaz, Fanny and Alexander, and the Beastie Boys Video Anthology.

Some of my Suggestions:

The Decalogue
The Singing Detective
Wit
Arrested Development
Pushing Daisies
Brideshead Revisited

And the Music Videos of
Beck
Bjork
Radiohead
Fatboy Slim

Twin Peaks… and whatever Watchmen music videos may exist.

There, I’ve destroyed The Auteurs.

Shit, I forgot about Twin Peaks

Brandon Bedaw

Well, I was being sarcastic. There already is a great box-set of Twin Peaks with everything you could ask for.

The Wire.

Most certainly Beck. Pretty much all Michel Gondry’s music videos. The ones he did for the White Stripes are excellent too. I also like the Weezer videos Spike Jonze did. And as far as TV shows go, there are I tone I’d have to mention worthy of the criterion label, but most already come in decent packaging.

If you’re looking for “Criterion” level quality in terms of music video collections, look no further than the Director’s Label series from Palm Pictures.

The collected work of Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, Anton Corbijn, Johnathan Glazer, Mark Romanek and Stephane Sednaoui.

The discs are beautifully produced, and full of bonus material and interviews with the filmmakers and musicians. If you have any interest in the art (yes, it is an art) of music videos, you really need these in your collection.

-Madonna – love her or hate her, she’s worked with most of the directors enshrined by Palm (with Jonze, Gondry and Corbijn notable exceptions) plus Fincher, Mondino, Akerlund, Lambert, Stölzl, Richie (their feature collaboration sure stank, but What It Feels Like For A Girl is way, way up there – a video of brutal beauty that pulls no punches) and others too numerous to mention→her work up to 2000 has been anthologized, but an update is overdue, and the Criterion treatment would be justified

-Dougal Wilson (highly imaginative British director)

-Floria Sigismondi (did some interesting non-Marilyn Manson work, too)

Tattoed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills. That’s right I said it, and I’ll repeat it again: Tattoed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills

@Natalie Gravenor

Right said Brandon, I own the Michel Gondry collection on Director’s Label and they have loads of extras, criterion would not add much to it.

Palm Pictures does indeed have a great collections of Music Videos already. As for TV shows, Ill second the Decalogue and in all seriousness put out Buffy as probably one of the more culturally important TV shows to come out in the last two decades.

Cowboy Bebop is worthy of Criterion treatment. I also find that a Criterion release of all of Wong Kar Wai’s commercial work would also be very interesting, plus it’s impossible to find a good copy of wkw/tk/1996@7’55"hk.net. with readable subs.

Hm, I don’t think ‘Pushing Daisies’ is Criterion material but I am going to miss it!

I’ve always enjoyed massive attack and Portishead’s videos… also as far as television… Weeds, The Wire, Six Feet Under

Maybe not Pushing Daisies, but definitely Wonderfalls

I’m curious about this desire to have these things be released by Criterion.

All of the tv shows mentioned have already been released on dvd, most of the them in the highest quality possible, with the most extras that will ever exist, and in massive box-sets that include every episode.

There is absolutely no reason for a company like Criterion, or any other company, to re-release these series, so the only thing you could possibly be wanting is a little C logo on the side of the box. Lets focus on content and depth in these forums, not logos and brand names.

Nothing!

leah

I actually don’t want criterion to release things other than films, this is just purely hypothetical.

Crap Monster

yea Brandon, i dont think this is meant to be taken too seriously since as you point out, it doesnt make a whole lot of logical sense. Its more so, what TV shows apply to the same standards Criterion uses when picking up a film for distribution. i.e. culturally important and significant works.

..also Leah, Criterion has already released non-films. They released that disc of Beastie Boys vids awhile back.

I got a little carried away with my sugestions. But I think Criterion is ideal to showcase some lost relics of television like they did with Berlin Alexanderplaz.

The Singing Detective and The Decalogue would be perfect additions to the Criterion Collection.
