I happen to agree with Marcello. When the monolith first appears the apes create weapons not the ability to reason with the other “tribe.” When it next appears on the surface of the moon it emits a piercing sound that adversely affects the explorers and the scene quickly shifts to the Jupiter mission. Mans extension Hal later tries to destroy the crew and nearly succeeds. If you look at that total body of Kubricks work I don’t think you’ll find much to support any conclusion of a “happy” ending for the human race. I always believed the starchild came and saw that mankind never evolved past its’ petty territorial gripes and destroyed us.
