“The Third Man”
Battle of Algiers. Don’t know if it was the first one I saw, but it was the first one I bought.
Needless to say, with all the extras in that release and the overall quality of the movie itself, I was hooked on Criterion Collection big time.
Amarcord.
I was hooked on Criterion immediately. The Ruling Class. Probably still my favorite Criterion front cover art work.
Knife in the Water was the first I watched, whilst Sansho the Bailiff was the first one bought with my own money. Thank you Alberta!
I am almost 50 years old and have watched numerous Criterion films. I am struggling to answer this question because I’d love to know. Great question, just wish I could give you an answer. I’ll keep working on it!
Hmmm…maybe L’Avventura (one of my all-time favorites) or was it The Conformist? Oh well.
It may have been Silence of the Lambs then again it may have been Chasing Amy.
Wild Strawberries. My first Bergman.
Seven Samurai, spine#2. Blockbuster video rental. Instant addict. Bam!
I think the 1st one I purchased was Silence of the Lambs.
My first Criterion was Seven Samurai. My father got the one-disc edition from the library; he started it but I finished it. Later I asked for the three-disc edition for my birthday and I got it.
Sid and Nancy. I was intrigued that there were dvd’s with liner notes. I was hooked immediately.
My first Criterion was actually Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums” — I had no idea what Criterion was before that and actually assumed it was just cool, modern American films they released. I found out about a year later that there was much, much more to the catalog. Now, it seems virtually every film I check out is a Criterion film.
Raging Bull
Yeah, I have this passion for Criterion now. Pretty much every movie on Criterion (or Eclipse) is worth watching.
David Lean’s Great Expectations. Probably the best adaptation from Dickens to the screen!
“Tokyo Drifter”
Seventh Seal…on Laserdisc….
The Royal Tenenbaums. It was not untill I picked up the Seventh Seal that really understood what it was. I think thats the greatest thing a flim could achieve is a criterion release.
Yojimbo.
rushmore. at the time dvd was in its relative infancy here and criterion were the stuff of legend. the day i bought my multi-region player in the summer of 2000 i ordered rushmore alongside fight club on region 1 dvd, incidently my first online purchases too.
Man Bites Dog.
I believe the first I watched was Spartacus, but the first I purchased was Videodrome. There was no looking back from there. :)
Godard’s Le Mepris. Pirated copy, of course. Back then i couldn’t afford anything better and criterion wasn’t available in India either. :(
The Seventh Seal was the first watched and the first bought was Straw Dogs
I think it was Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore” before I even knew what the Criterion Collection was.
The first spectacular CRITERION MOVIE i watched was – Alfred Hitchcock SPELLBOUND with Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck, and i loved the dream sequence by surrealist icon Salvador Dalí.
LadyPacMan1961
Hey there. I’m new with the auteurs but I have a question for all of you. What was the first Criterion movie you watched?
