I wish I could remember…. probably something like “La Belle et la Bête”, or, “The Red Shoes”.
my first was my own private idaho, which i bought yesterday:)

I very possibly was Fellini Satyricon…wait…maybe that was only a Janus film? twas on VHS. The Seventh Seal perhaps. But then there were all those laserdiscs my professor showed us in College. I can’t remember now. :-(
Citizen Kane – Laserdisc catalog #1 the version in a black box with a big stack of double-sided disks. Redefined watching a movie on TV at the precise moment I had discovered cinema as an art form. It was not only the first Criterion I bought, but the first LD I’d ever purchased. My first DVD was Criterion, too. I can’t recall which title, however.
the seventh seal.
Hard Boiled
Awesome…
The 400 Blows
I’m not sure. As far as actual Criterion DVDs go (my parents were not Laserdisc people) I’m thinking it was either The Seven Samurai or Rushmore. I know I saw Straw Dogs and others well before those, though, they just weren’t Criterion. I bought Straw Dogs in a Wal-Mart VHS bin next to the checkout line when I was 14 or so. What a strange movie to set up for an impulse buy.
First Criterion DVDs I watched before I actually knew what the Criterion Collection was were = The Royal Tenenbaums & The Battle of Algiers
First Criterion DVD I bought = M
Rashomon (first I saw)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (first I brought)
Autumn Sonata
The first one I bought and the first one I watched and the Criterion film I return to most often: GRAND ILLUSION
8 1/2 was my first time. It’s still one of my ten favorite films.
The first actual criterion edition film I saw was “Nights of Cabiria” Almost two years ago. It was also the First Federico Fellini film I saw and a life changing experience.
My first Criterion was Solaris.
The Seventh Seal
“The Royal Tenenbaums” or maybe “Dazed and Confused” I’m not completely sure.
In the Mood for Love. This was before I started paying attention.
Ran
I now own 96 Criterion titles. I know the first six titles I bought were:
Andrei Rublev
By Brakhage: An Anthology
Knife In The Water
Man Bites Dog
Solaris
That Obscure Object Of Desire
The Royal Tenenbaums
As for the very first Criterion I watched, I THINK it was Man Bites Dog. But I’m hooked now.
royal tenenbaums
Cries and Whispers – As if I didn’t love Bergman enoough
Seventh Seal!
It seems to be a popular choice.
North by Northwest or Blade Runner (laserdisc baby)
my first was vhs ,but it is the first
Cronenberg’s Dead Ringers
My first Criterion was Scorsese’s ‘Last Temptation of Christ’.
Seven Samurai
Drunken Father Figure of Old
The first one I saw was 8 1/2 in an art museum theater on the UGA campus… the first DVD I saw was the life aquatic… too bad it couldn’t have been a better one…
