Alright, I just watched like a 7 minute highlight reel of Riki-Oh on YouTube so I could check this out. I have not seen the whole thing, mind you, but just based on the 7 minutes I saw, it might in fact be the greatest movie ever made hahaha.
Still really like the Chopping Mall bit, though.
Cronenberg’s Videodrome has that scene where the guy’s head explodes with tumors. Granted is not a typical exploding-head sequence but it’s still pretty cool.
Morgan Freemans death in wanted… ok his head doesnt explode but its still pretty amazing:
Pulp Fiction, remember the car ride.
In Suicide Club a girls head get’s ran over by a train and explodes.
Ok so the head explosion scene in Scanners is great
The one in The Fury is also great
Story of Riki is amazing
Pulp Fiction yeah i like that one
Total Recall, i forgot about that one
The Suicide Club one is insane
Big Trouble in Little China…it totally shocked me as a kid!

That Suicide Club clip is quite something . . . maybe yet another head explosion movie worth watching? Really need to get to Riki-Oh still. That might have to come tomorrow.
Pulp Fiction I totally forgot about the head explosion!!! So just the mere fact that it somehow caught me by surprise makes it numero uno for me.
Also, long forgotten and not widely appreciated, I dig the aliens heads exploding in Mars Attacks! Green goo. Lol
Yes Riki-Oh is very good. There are a lot of supper gory scenes in the film.
ben simington is correct! the film i was talking about was called Wedlock. that had one of the better head ‘splosions i’ve ever seen
Has anyone said the JFK assassination in the Zapruder film? (sorry that was distasteful i know)
On a Serious note: Yeah Scanners is classic. Pulp Fiction its a great plot point. and i might have not seen it written before but I’m surprised The Elevator Scene in The Departed hasn’t been mentioned.
When it comes to bodily explosions, nobody challenges the genius of Riki-Oh!
The one in the original Dawn of the Dead is FUCKING HYSTERICAL. If you put it in slow motion it cuts from a shot of a real head to the absolute shittiest excuse for a paper mache head I’ve ever seen. It’s good for a hard laugh.
Remember the man’s head being filled to the brim with cockroaches in CREEPSHOW… until it bursts open at the seams?
by far Willem Dafoe’s head by gunshot in Wild at Heart. Such a memorable scene.
Cronenberg’s Scanners. Hilarious
I was going to say one of Peter North’s many infamous head shots, but then I changed my mind.
Goodreads Ehrenstein, I was gonna say the Cassavetes explosion too… But it’s more of a full-body blow-out.
what is this….everyone KNOWS its the one from Scanners
I remember an amazing half blown off head gunshot scene from the Proposition that amazed me when I saw it
Lots of awesome head-explosions have been mentioned here, but I do think the trophy belongs to Scanners without a doubt.
I thought this was worth posting though.
this thread is incredible. reminding me of so many head explosions i’ve forgotten about.
i remember seeing one in blade a long time ago. he stabbed a vampire in the neck with an EDTA or something and it’s head swelled up till it popped. couldn’t find it anywhere online though.
William H. Macy as “Little Bill” in BOOGIE NIGHTS.
When he blows his brains out against the wall it is very shocking and unexpected.
Los Bastardos – 2008
bump
As mentioned before, definitely The Proposition:
The Beyond had one too.
Crap Monster
the riki-oh scene in question is linked above in case anyone wanted to see it.
