Can’t say I’ve seen an awful lot of Spanish cinema but I rate Spirit of the Beehive pretty high.
My personal favorite is Carne Tremula but I acknowledge Habla con Ella is probably stronger. Either way, Pedro Almodóvar is god’s gift to Spanish cinema. Oh, and though I don’t necessarily think it’s the best in any category, Cria Cuervos is really cool.
El Laberinto del Fauno
Los Diarios de Motocicleta
El Orfanato
You can’t go wrong with anything that Gael Garcia Bernal is in. He’s great.
I hate Almodavar films, always is the same.
Noviembre (Achero Mañas)
El arte de morir (Álvaro Fernández Armero)
Abre los ojos (A. Amenabar)
Ay! Carmela (Carlos Saura)
You’re the one ( José Luis Garci)
Any film with Cantinflas.
El Orfanato
El Laberinto del Fauno.
Valentin
“Spanish” as in the county, SPAIN, right? Or do you just mean Spanish language?
La Parres, Almodovar’s films are not “all the same” even if they do feature recurring themes. Exploring the same themes is one of the marks of a great auteur; see Bergman and Wong Kar-Wai as examples.
amores perros
y tu mama tambien
Carandiru…
Spirit of the Beehive.
Are people listing Mexican movies here because they speak Spanish there, or because they don’t know the difference between Spain and Mexico?
Is Spanis a director or Country?
Hola Rick.
How ’bout Los Olvidados (The Forgotten), shot in Mexico in the early 50s by Luis Bunuel, a Spanish director?
Tras el cristal (Agustín Villaronga)
Los lunes al sol (Fernando León de Aranoa)
El sol del membrillo (Victor Erice)
En construcción (José Luis Guerín)
I like Jodorowsky’s films!
El Topo!
The Holy Mountain!
I just loved Torremolinos 73, by Pablo Berger. A funny and beautifully filmed hommage to cinema. Did anybody see it?
I love Almodóvar. VOLVER and BAD EDUCATION in particular.
THE ORPHANAGE and THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE are some of the best horror films I’ve seen come out of not just Spain but Europe in general. I wish Stateside horror film would get with the program.
El Topo, Spirit Of The Beehive
From Spain,
1. Spirit of the Beehive, for its charm and intimate mystery, and probably the most wonderful performance by a child (Erice and Ana Torrent achieve something miraculous)
+
Cria Cuervos (Saura)
The Flower of my Secret (Almodovar)
Talk to Her (Almodovar)
Tierra (Medem)
All about my Mother (Almodovar)
Death of a Cyclist (Bardem)
Lovers of the Arctic Circle (Medem)
Belle Epoque (Trueba)- an unpretentious engaging Oscar-winner, with the sexiest 4 sisters on screen
Solas (Zambrano)
Tristana (Bunuel)
does Kiarostami’s Five count?- apparently filmed at Gijon, Asturias. if so, no wonder the ducks changed course, cos i had a hell of a job finding my way too- just like Oviedo and Bilbao (what is it with Northern Spanish cities?)
Spirit of the Beehive was excellent.. I also love the films of Almodovar, which seem to hint influence of classic Spanish cinema, (Bunuel) yet feel fresh and specific to his own style.
From Spain:
Cría cuervos
El espíritu de la colmena (Spirit of the Beehive)
El sur (The South – Erice)
El sol de membrillo (The Quince Tree Sun)
La ley del deseo (Law of Desire)

Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother)
Los santos inocentes (The Holy Innocents)
Soldados de Salamina (David Trueba)

La niña de tus ojos (Fernando Trueba)
Padre nuestro (Francisco Regueiro)
Secretos del corazón (Secrets of the Heart)
Pablo Jiménez Santamaría
In my opinion: Noviembre(Achero Mañas) and Abre los ojos(Alejandro Amenábar).
