I whistle the 8 1/2 theme too often for my family’s comfort.
Several film scores inspire me. There’s a CD of the combined scores for “My Father’s Glory” and “My Mother’s Castle”. This is a perfect aural backdrop to a hot summer afternoon, complete with cicadas.
Now I’ve got the 8 1/2 theme stuck in my head…
A lot of the time I listen to it after just watching the film, but I don’t have tons of soundtracks anyway.
While I’m mowing the lawn. It actually makes me look forward to yard work.
Haha Law me too!
I listen to the Vertigo soundtrack constantly. Hell I’m listening to it right now.
I often also whistle the Lolita song.
Usually while writing.
On longer car trips, I’ll take along some CDs for when I get out of range of my local NPR station.
When I’m smoking weed under the stars.
Any time I listen to music. Or while painting.
I usually listen to soundtracks when I am working.
I got into movies because I only ever listened to scores as kid. Anyone else?
Drew, I’m glad to hear someone else listens to the Vertigo soundtrack on a constant basis (almost daily for me, haha).
The Lolita song is so damn catchy too…but I can’t really whistle.

I will admit that I once purchased the soundtrack to Stripes on iTunes after a night of partying, I was pretty drunk.
but it is AWESOME to run to.
so I got that going for me. which is nice.

Alright, Double Jackpot!!!
The worst part is that I aggressively whistle 8 1/2. Imagine shouting but in whistling form. Really really queer.
Tom, I first read that as “stairs” not stars and it cracked me up!
I used to spend my lunch breaks, when working in NYC, sitting on the steps in Grand Central with good headphones with a good film score and watch the people scurry about… very surreal and extremely cool… if you have the means, I’d highly recommend it.
Ennio Morricone during my bus ride to university and to home.
When I watch the film. Why buy the score when I can buy the film and hear it there?
I like listen to film scores because they bring back good memories.
haha it’s comforting to see it’s not just me who always has the 8 1/2 score in my head.
@Pendy
I used to do that while late at night when I was waiting for my train heading back from NYU! A film score makes for great people watching.
it’s always good to put on a score while reading or cleaning up your room. When a score is background to you doing something you always discover new parts of the music that you love.
When in great and desperate need for creative writing.
XM Radio has a channel devoted to movie soundtracks. I listen at work sometimes.
Any Kubrick Film, he made music in films what it is today.
Nearly every day, at home.
Any time, any place – except when I’m reading, then I need silence.
But I listen to film scores probably everyday at work or when I’m driving. If it’s effective, it immerses you in the mood of whatever film it’s from, it also enhances the mundane, boring daily experiences of working on a computer, etc. It can also cause me to reflect on the film and if I’m lucky I have new realizations about it/understand it more thoroughly.
Right now I’m listening to the track “Canada” by Carter Burwell from A Serious Man. It’s a haunting, melancholy piece of music – just too damn short.
Also, maybe this is melodramatic but I do tend to put on the really melancholic film music when I’m down. Not bombastic sorrowful scores but rather… well, Jon Brion’s score for Synecdoche, New York is kinda my go-to if I’m depressed.
Pendy Sixteen
Only during the film itself? On a long drive? While working? Writing? I’m just curious as to how film scores inspire you and how you enjoy them outside of the film itself, if at all.
