One of the best animated films ever made… one of the best films period. It was online a while ago, on Youtube or something. I don’t know if it’s still available, but even if watching it that way is technically illegal, everyone should see it.
On lighter note, when I first saw the title of this thread I laughed, having watch The Happening earlier today. Truly a film that’s tragic on a completely different level.
I agree it one of the most powerful films period. It “should” released on Dvd…but unfortunately it’s not. It’s available on video.
We should add a disclaimer to those going into the film sight unseen, however…
This movie will break your heart into thousands of pieces.
It’s still on YouTube.

It is very depressing. I should have mentioned it on that “Most Depressing Movie You’ve Ever Seen” thread. It’s beautifully done, though. The things they try to do to avoid nuclear fallout and all that were based on actual government pamphlets in England, which makes it even more tragic.
I’m not such a huge fan. The mix of stop-motion and hand-drawn animation completely didn’t work for me and actually looked kinda ugly at points kicking me straight out of the film, and though I appreciate the satire it made it difficult for me to completely emotionally invest in the film. Still it’s kinda interesting and a decent little film.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched it but I don’t recall any stop motion. Do you know whereabouts in the film it is so I can take a look? Clearly it didn’t bother me at all to even remember it being there, but now I’m curious.
The house and the objects in it are done by stop-motion.
It’s out on DVD here in Japan. Released (as far as I recall) as part of Ghibli’s selection of world animation masterpieces. And it certainly is that.
Is it really not out on DVD anywhere else? Not even in the UK?
It’s not Ghibli, it was a British co-production, looking very similar to the Christmas favourite THE SNOWMAN, being based on a ‘storybook’ also written and drawn by Raymond Briggs.
