I just saw “Winter’s Bone” last night after hearing great things about it over the summer. It won a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, its getting Oscar buzz and scoring through the roof on critic aggregate sites. But wow was I disappointed. I can usually understand where the critics are coming from even if I can’t applaud a film. But their reaction and mine are one of the biggest disconnects I can recall.

The performances are fine. But for all of the film’s emphasis on its location, their is very little done with tone or mood. As for the plot, its vague story does not add to the mystery, it only gets the main character from A to B. There is nothing here in style or in story to compel me to revisit the film to dig deeper.
I am baffled to say the least.

The reaction says more about the viewer than the film.

The director really likes using the word bone in her titles.
