The World Cinema Foundation is restoring it, so it may be released in the coming months in a much better quality than what’s circulating on the intertrons. If you don’t want to wait, the intertrons is your best bet.
(P.S. Did my adoration send you over the edge to find the film?)
There are rumors about it getting released by Criterion in the future, but meanwhile you can purchase a Taiwanese bootleg DVD of the 237 minutes version with English subtitles.
I think I’m going to be patient and wait for the restoration, but if that’s not an option, I’ll just watch it online.
Glemaud, your adoration was the final straw. I must see it!
Even with a really bad print online on google video, I was astounded by what Yang created.
I wish Yang never died and his films were distributed widely.
A Brighter Summer Day has already been restored by WCF. The restored version actually premiered at Cannes last year. It was most recently shown at Rotterdam and will be at the Walter Reade in NYC next week. I’d like to believe that the rumored Criterion DVD will be worth the wait for many.
I just saw the first 20 minutes and was blown away by it. Thanks Glemaud!
I’ll probably see it next weekend.
Most definitely my favorite by Edward Yang closely followed by “The Terrorizer” and “Taipei Story”.
Jimmy B.
Thanks in advance.
