Where the Wild things are look like the most promising film of 2009 so far, for me anyway.

Heres the Trailer: http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/wherethewildthingsare/

Opinions, thoughts, etc.

I am not a big fan of the documentary style of shooting, it makes it seem like they’re saying this fantasy is a reality.

This film isn’t shot like a documentary at all. Within each frame the lighting and environment is very precise and surreal, while a documentary will usually let the environment speak for itself (Don’t Look Back, Louis Malles’ documentaries). If your talking about the cameras movement then it is still nothing like a documentary. Most of the shots in the trailer are either still or have very subtle movements. And the ones that are handheld aren’t necessarily pulling away from the fantasy by any means. The Science of Sleep was shot mostly hand held and so was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being Malkovich had some, and finally Waking Life (not saying that waking life is good but what I am saying is that this “documentary” style filmmaking never pulled you away from the surrealness of the film) so all of those are fantastical but the handheld doesn’t pull away from the film at all. Even so most of the shots in “Where The Wild Things Are” aren’t even shot “documentary” style to begin with.

Oh, that looks very, very cool. That is going to be high on my list this year.

Spike Jonze just climbed way up my cool person list because he used “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire in the trailer.

Spike Jonze had to be the most perfect pick for directing this movie. This is really the only film of 2009 that has me extremely excited.

It doesn’t look like a documentary at all, it just looks like a really fucking good movie. Damn, it’s not coming out til October? Noooo…..

I have faith in Spike Jonze’s abilities, and the visuals and storytelling looks great.

Though, adding in a plot with Max’s mom bringing home different men and showing how that effects Max seems unnecessary.

I think that’s completely necessary, Jack.

Obviously for the reason of filling out a feature length film adaptation of a fifty page, fully illustrated book, but also to give Max a better reason to escape into his imagination other than that he misbehaves and his mother sends him to bed with no dinner.

Let me preface this statement by saying I’m very much looking froward to this movie.

Giving Max a better reason, or any specific reason, robs the character of his archetypal stature. We take an broad statement about children and childhood and turn into something much more narrow.

Though I gather all this only from a two minute clip, and I still fully expect that Jonze and Eggers have created something quite worth watching.
