I don’t think a director has passed 5 films I gave my highest score to.
Most of the filmmakers that have given me the most 10/10 are filmmakers who are also filmmakers that end up on my list of favorite directors.
Stanley Kubrick (4): Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut
Francis Ford Coppola (4): The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now
Woody Allen (3): Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes & Misdemeanors
Robert Altman (3): The Long Goodbye, 3 Women, Short Cuts
Jean-Pierre Melville (3): Le Samourai, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge
Sidney Lumet (3): Twelve Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, The Verdict
Roman Polanski (3): Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion
John Cassavetes (3): Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, Love Streams
Michael Haneke (3): The Piano Teacher, Cache, The White Ribbon
Lars von Trier (3): Dogville, Antichrist, Melancholia
Gus Van Sant (2): Elephant, Paranoid Park
Network not a 10 from Lumet Santino? Psh, easily his best film. Also, on an unrelated note, is your handle related to Santino’s Pizza by any chance? Best pie in LA, or at least the valley, and I’ve often wondered if you are Santino himself.
Looking over my rankings it’s surprising to me how little 10/10’s I’ve dished out, only 21 out of roughly 1400. Thought there were more than that…. guess nut.
In fact the only two filmmakers to receive multiple 10’s from me are Kubrick, and Lynch. The way I rank though the difference between a 10/10 and a 9/10 is pretty marginal, and I only give a 10 to something I’ve seen at least 3-5 times (usually) so many 9/10’s are 10/10’s just waiting to be “knighted” as it were.
