jackson makes outstanding dvds without the necessity for criterion though, thats the main reason i dont think its necessary.
Argetinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel: “La ciénaga” (The Swamp, 2001), “La niña santa” (The Holy Girl, 2004) o “La mujer sin cabeza” (The Headless Woman, 2008). The best cinema in spanish since Buñuel.
Pedro Costa, Charles Burnett,
Alejandro Jodorowsky, El Topo would be an amazing release.
there’s no clint eastwood in the collection (not even any of his performances), so that would make a decent addition, although the fact that pretty much all of his films are warner titles dictates that this will probably never happen.
nicholas ray is missing too, as is peter watkins.
Danny boyle maybe. not sure.
Costa, Yang (other than Yi Yi), Rivette, Garrel, Robbe-Grillet, Uchida, etc., etc. The list goes on.
Sergio Leone
RE: ADAM
aside from the LOTR trilogy and KING KONG, a lot of Jackson’s DVD selections don’t have much by the way of extras or insight.
i’m not asking for something on the scale of a LOTR (which, let’s face it, has no more secrets to keep, it’s probably the most-detailed film series on DVD to date).
but, i’d like to hear what Jackson has to say about his earlier works in a commentary, see any behind-the-scenes footage that he must have taken, get some insight on the inner workings of grindhouse-style Aussie cinema (especially since there are so very few titles that make it over here that fits into that sub-genre).
and as for DANNY BOYLE…
while most of his movies are definitely Criterion-worthy, a lot are probably too “fresh” for any new Criterion editions…
but, SHALLOW GRAVE and a new re-examination of THE BEACH would be good.
paul thomas anderson tops my list. john carpenter would be cool too, especially the thing. i love that movie.
How about Paul Thomas Anderson, Michel Gondry, Qeuntin Tarantino, Joel & Ethan Coen, and Michael Mann along with the others already mentioned.
David Lynch. It would also be nice to have scene selections on the Mulholland Drive DVD.
I certainly agree with Alejandro Jodorowsky and PT Anderson being included. A nice clean up of Jodorowsky’s work in high def with supplements would be great.
As for PT, I think most of his DVD’s are fine, but I think his name deserves to be included in the Criterion family.
re: RYAN
it would seem that most of p. t. anderson’s dvd’s have ample supplements, but i found that THERE WILL BE BLOOD was very lacking. I would love to see a criterion treatment of that. maybe convince daniel day lewis to read excperts of sinclair’s OIL!
the 2 disc boogie nights is basically a transfer of the old criterion laserdisc, even down to the artwork!
@Adam
That I did not know.. I was too young when laser discs were around to have even had a chance.
David Lynch, Paul thomas anderson, James Cameron (if they include michael bay…)
@ryan -
me too! i would totally recommend the release tho, its great. hard eight (sydney) would be a great release for criterion tho. the uk release has no extras as such, and it seems like the sort of title they would pick up.
i posted this link on bottomboys page if anyone else is interested. its a review of the autralian release of bad taste, a decent package im told -

Woody Allen’s films need to have definitive versions released.
Woody Allen’s films need to have definitive versions released.
am i right in thinking woody allen doesnt “do” dvd?
How so?
I’ve read or heard that Woody Allen objects to special features, commentaries, supplements, etc. on the DVD releases of his films. That was some years ago but I haven’t seen anything to convince me that he changed his mind.
Oh no. Well, it would be nice. I wonder why he objects to this.
Alejandro Jodorowsky is a great one to mention. I don’t believe there is a North American copy of Santa sangre. It is said to be one of his best and I’d love to see that released. They have a decent boxset of 3 of his other films though.
Paul Thomas Anderson is another one who doesn’t love documentaries and commentaries (at least he is now). All his films have decent releases, though Hard Eight could have a nicer cover.
David Lynch just released his own boxset (The Lime Green Set). He generally likes to do things himself, so I doubt we’d see a criterion release from him anytime soon.
David Lynch-just like C. said you’ll never see it. Jean Pierre Jeunet would be cool (Marc Caro).
Satyajit Ray… or any Indian film-makers at all really!
There’s a total lack of good Chinese cinema there either.
I would like to see Sam Raimi or one of the odder Coen films. A P.T. Anderson film would be good, anything but Magnolia. Kubrick need’s something put out by them. I would love a box of the eirly films of Peter Jackson with dead alive put out as brain dead. Blue Velvet and Mr. Vengeance both deserve it. Jean Pierre Jeunet. DANNY BOYLE George Romero.
kubrick already has spartacus in the collection. although i would love for them to pick up barry lyndon, alas the fact its a warner film dictates this wont happen.
bottomboy
automatically comes to mind…
PETER JACKSON
i think a nice Eclipse showcase of some of his earlier works…BAD TASTE…MEET THE FEEBLES (which is notoriously available in the U.S. through “unauthorized” versions)…DEAD-ALIVE…would be a huge seller!
