Ok, then I disagree with Drew. I agree that special features are nice to have, but they are not half as important as the film itself.
The Marx Bros., especially Duck Soup in today’s political state
And Charlie Chaplin
i think asian, african and south american cinema is very poorly represented on criterion… it seems asian seems to be equivalent to japanese cinema here… very little from south american apart from cuaron, cant think of a single title from africa! so lots of work to be done… iranian new wave, indian directors – most definitely ray and ghatak, tomas gutierrez alea, solanas, mambety, diop, ousmane sembene! its an endless list…
The complete works of Nagisa OSHIMA including his documentaries for TV
On the first page of this topic a few people mentioned, Danny Boyle.
Danny Boyle was/is a Criterion director…. I own the Criterion Laserdisc of “Trainspotting”.
It’s too bad Criterion couldn’t get the rights for it on DVD. But it would be nice to see more Boyle films come to Criterion DVD/BluRay like, “Millions”, “Shallow Grave”…. even “The Beach” (yes, I like the premise of the story… and for what it is, it’s well executed.)
Hal Ashby needs to be represented: “Harold & Maude” deserves a Criterion treatment.
Michel Gondry: for his unique, innovative style and visual storytelling.
Don Siegel, like they did The First Films of Sam Fuller box
Jean Vigo
Sadao Yamanaka
Mikio Naruse (only one film there)
Yoshishige Yoshida
Theo Angelopoulos
Miklos Jancso
Paul Thomas Anderson
Lynch and Jodorowsky!
Forget directors—> Open City needs to be inducted ASAP
That being said, I feel like THE CRITERION COLLECTION has become lax with some of their choices, almost as if adding new titles is about making money not making a solid list. Maybe I’m just being picky or maybe movie quality has gone down.
Lynch and Kusturica. Now
Rowland Brown
Tsai Ming-Liang
Manoel de Oliveira
David Lynch
Michael Haneke
Hong Sang Soo
Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Hirokazu Kore-eda
Peter Greenaway
Ken Russell
Lynch, Haneke, Boyle, Gondry, etc. would be great….but they are fine as far as availability. Other director’s films are in dire need of a decent release….or a release at all.
^^Peter Greenaway for sure. His films are too good to be left out of the collection.
I also wish Criterion would release some early Zhang Yimou too. could you imagine Raise THe Red Lantern on criterion blu-ray? i
Satyajit Ray for sure
Edward Yang (Yi Yi is his only film available in even any sort of acceptable quality, for christs sake)
Abel Ferrara
Jean Vigo (the early shorts certainly deserve release)
Manoel de Oliveira
Victor Sjostrom
Erich von Stroheim
Pier Paolo Pasolini deserves more than just Salo
Drew Gregory
Then you so do not agree with me!
I love special features. Love love love them. Historical context. Making ofs. Interviews. I eat that stuff up. Image and sound quality is also important to me.
