WHICH DIRECTORS...NOT...CURRENTLY REPRESENTED IN THE CRITERION COLLECTION DO YOU WANT TO SEE INCLUDED?

I agree about Bela Tarr. There’s at least one or two films there that would fit nicely into the collection.

I agree re: Errol Morris especially…we needs more Criterion docs. I can’t say it enough, but I would ADORE a CC release of Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb.

Herzog
Leone
Lynch
Kubrick
Allen

They are all very deserving, although I am sure they have attempted to get rights to release there films already.

Wim Wenders has a lot of films in criterion but I would love to see Paris, Texas and Buena Vista Social Club added to the list and extraordinary director. Elia Kazan probably with A face in the crowd, Sydney Lumet (Serpico, 12 Angry Men, Running on Empty)

Miranda July’s film (me and you and everyone we know) would have a great treatement on criterion, especially after the DVD had no significant features. Takashi Miike, all his films, love to see an essiental Wong Kar Wai collection with Happy Together and 2046 one of them.

Pedro Almondovar period! Viva Pedro! Maybe just his earlier works.

Lastly Atom Egoyan, Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter. And put on more Croenenberg!

Echoing earlier post on animation. Ocelot should have far greater exposure.

I would love to see The Heiress and why not some Ford or Wilder films. The Great Silence is also overly deserving I think…

I was talking with my co-worker yesterday about Erich von Stroheim, and we both were wondering why some of his early directorial work is so hard to find, at least in the US. The films seem very entertaining, it seems like an obvious Eclipse box set.

David Fincher deserves all his films to get the supplemental treatment because they are all full of goodies! Some Spielberg also, we all gotta get passed the last indy and forgive and forget. He’s still a master, don’t forget Munich wasn’t that long ago! Curtis Hanson maybe LA Confidential, shit even 8 mile which wasn’t that bad!(take it easy on me). Tim Burton (beetleljuice, edward scissorhands, ed wood)

Howard Hawks and William Wyler would be cool Eclipse series.

re: Missy
definitely David Fincher.

I’d like to see some Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry, both for their films and music videos.

I’ve noticed many people listing P.T. Anderson. I love films, but Criterion has released a film of his — Boogie Nights. In fact, they released a dvd with the exact artwork and extras that are available on the current edition dvd, but under a New Line Release and not Criterion.

I would like see Criterion take on Jean Rouch, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Jafar Panahi, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Inarritu, Tarantino, and Ken Loach. Most of these directors are still going strong. The only one who isn’t is Jean Rouch. Someone who should be given the Criterion touch.

Mike Leigh and Ken Loach would be wonderful. There is a distinct lack of DVD releases from both at least in North America.

I assume it’s a licensing problem. maybe something tied to BBC since both did a number of projects as TV drama.

mike leigh’s ’’naked’’ is in the collection already.

I would like to see Walter Hill in Criterion. Has long career and he,s never mentioned enough in my opinion.

james whale, perhaps? most especially frankenstein, bride, and/or waterloo bridge.

I know Spartacus is already in there, but seriously, Kubrick’s FEAR & DESIRE needs to be released because it is unavailable on DVD.

Woody Allen and David Lynch would be great, but I know neither of them like to talk about the films really (at least not enough to make worthwhile special features).

Hal Ashby has some good films…BEING THERE would be great, as would HAROLD & MAUDE.

Terrence Malick needs all of his films done. They did Days of Heaven, but BADLANDS, THE THIN RED LINE, and THE NEW WORLD need to be added.

Nicholas Ray for sure.

PT Anderson would be nice, but I’m content with the features on his releases.

Michael Haneke would make a nice bunch.

Raoul Walsh could have a nice Eclipse set.

Someone who has vastly dropped out of the radar, has worked in the hollywood system for quite some time has an oscar and a masterpiece under his belt. Robert Zemeckis and i know of Beowulf but i think his last live action film was cast away. Which was brilliant by the way.

Terrance Mallick, definitely. A fully restored long cut of The New World on Blu-Ray would be at the top of my buy list.

I have the Viva Pedro! Collection, so I don’t know if I’d want to re-buy Criterion editions (maybe on BR), but I do dig the love-fest for his work. He’s one of the few directors who can handle soap opera material and turn it into high art.

Woody Allen might work as a restored but barebones Eclipse series. I believe his quote on the issue of DVD extras and such is “The film should speak for itself.”

Also, Kim Ki-Duk is awesome. I’d buy a Criterion edition of 3-Iron or Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring. Not Bad Guy though. That one wasn’t very impressive. I think the theme of silence in his films would make a great paper topic as well.

Peter Greenaway – I know Zeitgeist has been re-releasing his stuff lately, but a Criterion Blu-Ray of A Zed and Two Noughts would be fantastic. Also, several of his films (The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover, Prospero’s Books, and Nightwatching) have either gone OOP, or haven’t been released in the states on DVD or BR.

I’d really like to see proper releases for the films of:

Elaine May, Charles Burnett, Jonas Mekas, Jean Eustache, Tom Noonan, Andrew Bujalski, Michael Roemer and Alan Clarke

Also, Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer sorely needs a proper restoration and north american release.

It seems that MGM Classics is holding on to a bunch of the great titles. Like Wender’s WINGS OF DESIRE and Elia Kazan’s films.
And, it is a shame they don’t pay much attention to their lesser known works.

I really wish the Criterion Collection had more silent films in it as well.

cole roulain

Jay Kranz

alejandro jodorowski for sure. we dont need el topo and holy mountain since anchor bays dvds are great. but how bout a legit special edition of santa sangre and then a eclipse of tusk and rainbow thief.

Brian

Kusturica, especially Time of the Gypsies
Paradjanov, properly restored
Miklos Jancso (more-or-less completely absent on DVD)
Theo Angelopoulos (an Eclipse set of early work?)
A Victor Erice set (I know there’s one in there already, but…)
Klimov’s Come and See done properly
