Kate Winslet (I fall in love with every character she plays)
Meryl Streep (do I need to tell, why)
Tabu (one of the few Indian actresses who are not just about looks)
Maggie Cheung (talented and absolutely gorgeous)
Madhubala ( every Indian’s fantasy girl at one time or another)
Nutan (great actress)
Jun Ji-hyun (not really in the same league as others mentioned above, but she brought the whiff of freshness in Korean Cinema)

@Jose Fernando Arango: Well, Jun Ji-hyun is known for her performances in films like “My Sassy Girl” and other Korean romantic films such as Windstruck and Daisy. You must watch My Sassy Girl.

Kalki Koechlin has so far only acted in one Hindi film called Dev.D and it was a modern interpretation of Devdas. You should search more about it on Wikipedia. On a side note, I created the wiki article of Kalki.

Either Australian or English. Too restrictive. However, within this group, I think I like Kate Winslet best. Her track record is uneven but she seems to be the only one who can act in a normal (everyday) range. The others, particularly Swinton, are specialists in extremes.

OK, Jose. When I saw Giovanna Mezzogiorno in “L’ultimo bacio” I thought she was as good an actress as there is. Incredibly expressive and, as a bonus, beautiful. I haven’t seen the new film in which she plays Mussolini’s mistress but I am looking forward to it.

Also, I love Naomi Watts. (I know, an Australian.). Wonderful actress.

One more. I think Lauren Ambrose is exceptional. Probably her most prominent work is the TV series “Six Feet Under,” but whenever I have seen her she has stood out. I know her voice is in “Where The Wild Things Are” but she will probably be seen in many films.

I agreed with you, Noami Watts is a wonderful actress, I don’t know to Giovanna Mezzogiorno I would like know more about her

For modern actresses, I’ll take Kate Winslet. She’s so legit that when she takes her clothes off, my first thought is: ‘why would her character do that?’ A big step for me.

From the past: Gish and Pickford could play anything, though they weren’t always given the chance. And Clara Bow, really, is the best thing ever filmed.

Jose, Giovanna’s new film, which is directed by Marco Bellochio (“Fists In His Pocket,” “China Is Near” [CRITERION, WHERE ARE YOU!]) is showcasing at the NYFF. I will have to wait until it’s commercial release. You can rent “L’ultimo bacio.” Her mother in the film is played by Stefania Sandrelli, another love of mine.

Howard, thanks I going to rent that movie

From those you posted I pretty much dislike 4(!) so that leaves Miss Carter (who can be quite good, if she doesn’t have to play in a Tim Burton film). You probably couldn’t have chosen worse selections for me …

My favorite actress is Arletty.

I just thought of another actress who excites me. Martina Gedeck. I have seen her in “The Lives of Others” and “Mostly Martha.” She is brilliant in both films. There is a new film out that I have not seen called “The Baader Meinhof Complex.” She is supposed to be wonderful in that as well.

I have heard that she is difficult to know on set. She is so involved with her character that she might be off-putting to people who work with her. The quote that is attributed to her “My audience doesn’t want to know how many eggs I fry in the morning. I speak through my characters” sounds like what I have heard about her.

c’mon Sano,you dislike Tilda and Emma? :O

i’d understand the other three since their artistic merit has leaned more to commercialism than some more art-house,but Emma and Tilda are modern Brit classic leading ladies of the big screen ;)

i’ll also add to the list Candela Pena and Machiko Kyo…

Julia Styles is underrated. I tend to feel that actresses are marginalized and set back through the western white male hegonomy and thus we should only let movie and play roles by preformed by male actors.

Yes, Martina Gedeck is wonderful. Definitely one of my favorites. You should also watch “Sommer ’04” with her as the main protagonist. There are some wonderful actresses here in Germany.

@Dmitris
Swinda and Blanchett can be (or actually are) a possible reason for not watching a film. Winslet isn’t much better, and Thompson can be decent. Maybe dislike is too harsh a word for Thompson. I just don’t like her. ;-)
It’s not that they can’t act, they can, (I recently saw Tilda Swinton in a very good performance in Schlingensief’s masterful “Egomania”) but it’s usually not my cup of tea, and I don’t enjoy seeing them on screen.

Ohh Egomania is great! Actually Swinton and Schlingensief were a couple, back in the days. I’ll take Tilda any time!
