WHICH MOVIES...PUT OUT IN LAST 5 YEARS...DO YOU THINK WILL ONE DAY JOIN THE CRITERION COLLECTION?

I know that these two are not real recent but they are practically impossible to find: The Year My Voice Broke and Last Days of Disco

I would like to see some of Godard’s newer things.
I am in the process of really understanding French but you can’t find any of Godard’s newer films with subtitles.
I guess they really aren’t classics and haven’t been brought anywhere besides France, though.
I also think that Billy the Kid deserves Criterion treatment, along with Synecdoche, New York and Lost in Translation.

THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS or THE BOSS OF IT ALL by Lars Von trier, BROKEN FLOWERS by jarmusch. VERA DRAKE, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT and one more: PIANO TUNER OF EARTHQUAKES. I know that most of the few who saw that one didn’t like it, but the BROTHER’S QUAY are just so damned Criterion worthy. Actually there are quite a few in the last 5 years when I think about it, but I’ll stop there.

Todd Field’s LITTLE CHILDREN

Mike Leigh’s VERA DRAKE

Gus van Sant’s ELEPHANT

Joshua Marston’s MARIA FULL OF GRACE

Parranaud’s/Strappi’s PERSEPOLIS

then … maybe:

BRICK, ONCE, THE LIVES OF OTHERS, SHORTBUS, THE KITE RUNNER

Nothing anyone has mentioned, anyways it’s too early too say. There’s dozens of little known films from around the world dating back to the 70’s and 60’s and even from cinema giants Bergman, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Reisnass, and Bunuel, that they have yet to release. A lot of people are naive in mentioning big studio titles, those they won’t come by and already have nice editions anyhow.

I reject Babel, Irreversible and No Country For Old Men …which I guess it’s unavoidable for Criterion to pickl on it… I would like to find Amores Perros, City of God, Carandiru & Donnie Darko, and finally, hope the swedish film “As it Is In Heaven” by Kay Pollack will get at least an Eclipse release with.. I don’t know what.

I must go outside the five-year range, but will start from the bottom up: The Darjeeling Limited is a defnitie, as Anderson is on the Criterion hull for the long haul. Criterion SERIOUSLY needs to get John Sayles into its catalogue, perhaps with Lone Star or Eight Men Out. More recently, there’s Sean Penn’s Into the Wild and There Will be Blood. Then there’s Boogie Nights, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, Blood Simple (Still no Coen Brothers in the collection, Hmmmm), Badlands (More Malick, please), Cinema Paradiso, Schindler’s List, Blade Runner, Minority Report, Brokeback Mountain, Chinatown, Hearts of Darkness (one of the best documentaries ever about filmmaking), La Dolce Vita (Why Criterion hasn’t gotten this gem fron Federico Fellini is beyond me), and the list goes on. It would have been nice to see a Criterion edition of Eraserhead, but David Lynch, being the reclusive, eccentric freak he is turned it down. He prefers people just watch the movie and judge from themselves. Supplement shluplements, he says!

Sofia Coppola’s films – The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation?

Justin Galvin

If this is a wish list then…

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance
Old Boy
All released together in a set as Chan-Wook Park’s Vengeance Trilogy

Miami Vice
Pan’s Labyrinth
2046
Children of Men
Requiem For A Dream
Marie Antoinette (Sophia Coppola version)
Run Lola Run
Amores Perros
A.I.

Just realised The Virgin Suicides is nearly 10 years old – I should’ve read the title

Keagan Brooks

It seems Criterion likes releasing several works from a director at once, so here are some combos I would love to see

Memento / Following – Nolan

Children of Men / Y Tu Mama Tambien – Cuaron

Requiem for a Dream / The Fountain / Pi – Aronofsky

Punch Drunk Love / Magnolia / There Will Be Blood – PT Anderson

Run Lola Run / The Princess and the Warrior – Tykwer

And heck, maybe even some Coen Bros, Blood Simple / Fargo / Raising Arizona to start? Even a few David Lynch titles would be great.

I dont think that Darjeeling will get the Criterion release right away, but one day I am sure it will. It just has to build up a bit more interest first I think.

Lynch’s films may never get the Criterion treatment, as Lynch likes to be very hands-on with his movies when they get authored. I don’t know if Criterion would allow that. I second Elephant by Van Sant, that is a brilliant and beautiful film.

Keagan Brooks

Yeah, I agree about Lynch.

As for Elephant, it seems likely to me, since they already have a number of Van Sant titles. Drugstore Cowboy is another good one, although not in the last 5 years (sorry).

There Will be Blood, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, I’m Not There, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Oldboy, Children of Men, The Pianist, Brokeback Mountain, Sideways, The Fall, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; some others that are still current but not within 5 years old: The Thin Red Line, Underground, The Piano Teacher, Santa Sangre, Lost in Translation.

Blake

Some of these films are a little older but they should join the Criterion library.
Sideways
City of God
Oldboy
Punch-Drunk Love
There Will Be Blood
About Schmidt
Volver
All About My Mother
Talk To Her

And this might be a little weird, but I think it’d be perfect for the Criterion Collection…

John Carpenter’s The Thing

I don’t understand the fascination with Criterion for films that already have perfectly acceptable releases by other companies…do you folks really get that much out of the Criterion labels on your shelves?

strawdawg

Steve, I couldn’t agree with you more. Sometimes I wonder if some of these fans don’t just buy all the Criterions to say they have them in their “collections”. I seriously think a lot of the Criterion fans don’t even watch them. Since this site has opened, I have read the most asinine posts ever. I thought IMDB was bad. If you read the Criterion forum pages there are fans who LIST all of their “spine numbers” after every post. This is insane. Sorry, I just had to get this off my chest and this seemed a good place to do it.

I understand the original post though. A lot of films are out there that only get very minimal exposure by the company that releases the movie and I certainly have had my wishlist of possible Criterion releases. But, with that said, you make a good point that most of the films mentioned in this post already have great versions out there.

CONTOUR (2006)

a film by The Stunt People

directed by Eric Jacobus

I have said it before and I will say it again until everyone in this network knows about it. Contour is quite possibly THE BEST ACTION MOVIE TO EVER BE MADE INSIDE THE UNITED STATES.

I have posted a link to the trailer before and I will post it again:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J35adpK9wo&feature=channel_page

And just so anyone reading this could get an idea of what the action is like in this movie, here is a link to a clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-eH_QuHnn8&feature=related

YouTube user dardrex777 has even compiled a series of ten Stunt People clips with commentary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t7D6YKowII&feature=related

And no I am not affiliated in any way with the Stunt People. I just wish to see these guys receive the recognition that they deserve.

Honestly, I hope no movies in these specific last five years of 04 – 09 (except Brand Upon the Brain!) ever have anything to do with this list, especially There Will Be Blood or anything made by Chan Wook Park.

And they’re cheaper, too, Steve. But many of us would still be stuck in Hollywood video if it weren’t for Criterion making such a big deal about some of these movies that many happen to have strictly shit versions for sale, which seems to say alot about what’s considered “good” in this country, and getting people interested in them, again who otherwise might’ve thought that, I’m sorry if I have something against this movie, There Will Be Blood is as original as it gets.
