With this title out in the UK on Blu-ray, I wonder if we will see a Criterion Blu-ray edition soon?
The original Italian with a 185 minute running time is (I believe) the better version. Enjoy, it is a work of beauty.
Mr. Minnock is correct. It’s Visconti’s masterpiece, and Lancaster (though dubbed) is truly great in it.
That blu-ray is a must-have. Just spot-checked the quality and it is most impressive.
Looks like this will be released by Criterion on BD. At least that’s what I get from the drawing.
I think I saw the 195 min version in Turkey way back in 1965… definetely the 1963 Italian version…. Criterion has done here a beautiful job… The British bluray is on its way but I wonder what the Criterion bluray version look like! Smashing, it should be…
I have the BFI blu-ray version. Unfortunately, it is the faulty disc that came out last year (apparently something went wrong with the black levels during the all-important ball scene that takes up the last 40 minutes of the film), but I never went about gettting it replaced by the newer perfect disc. I watched it for the first time New Year’s Eve night – a staggering film. DVD Beaver have a comparison of the new BFI and the Criterion discs here
I’ve ordered the British bluray…. I am very curious… I’ll let you know hwen it arrives whther the ball scene goes well…

I havent seen the film yet, but I was curious as to which version is more essential.
