How familiar are you with Hanake’s other films?
Not very to be perfectly honest. In fact I have not seen any. I would like to check out Cache and the piano teacher
Though it’s not my favorite of his films, it’s a good movie. Like his other work, he’s doing some things that you don’t necessarily encounter in everyday narrative filmmaking, so it can be jarring if you’re not acclimated.
I think it’s a fine entrance into Haneke’s world. Religion is a new theme for him, but it still retains his personal touch, his very distinct touch, might I add.
I enjoyed it a lot, and would suggest it to anyone.
For what it’s worth, it’s among the top 100 films I’ve seen from the last decade.
Oh yea? Well, it’s in my Top films of all time.
Hah.
Hell, I saw it twice, and I rarely see films more than once.
So, can I assume that the white ribbon is a proper film of Hanake’s to start with?
Honestly, I’d start with his first film, The Seventh Continent, but there’s nothing wrong with starting with The White Ribbon.
Just don’t start with Funny Games U.S. and you’re good.
Yeah, I agree it a decent point of entry . . . and, yes, don’t make it a priority to the see Funny Games U.S.
I thought “The White Ribbon” was fantastic, and it was the first Hanake film I’d seen.
Yeah, you can’t go wrong with starting with the White Ribbon, though Seventh Continent would also be a good place to start – they’re two very different films, so just see them both.
Yeah..
I’ve only seen Funny Games US and The White Ribbon. I honestly don’t understand the appeal for it whatsoever. I can see the his style, but as for the plot – it was a very odd and twisted film that left me with little but sick thoughts.
The way it’s supposed to be.
I like CODE UNKNOWN because he made the film where it can not be easily imagined due to our expectation on the scenario. i.e the subway scene where two punks terrorizes the other riders especially the Julliette Binoche character and a man gallently tells them if they have problem take it with him and leave her alone or else he’ll put up a fight. When the subway made a stop the two punks exit the frame given me the impession that they made their destination. The subway took off again and their was like three minutes of silence between Julliette and the man who stepped in and I was saying " Lady , thank him for helping you’"
Then the subway made another stop and offscreen their was a shout and laughs from those punks whom I thought left the subway. This time they stepped off. And Jullietes’s Character thanked the man afterward. I didn’t see that coming. That’s what I liked about that movie.
Queens2010
I have yet to see it and was wondering if people enjoyed the film. I would appreciate it if people could provide their opinion without spoiling it.
