Question: Is De Oliveira the oldest man to ever direct a film?
Theo Angelopoulos is 75+
Sydney Lumet is 85, Claude Chabrol is almost 80, those are the first two that came to mind.
Woody is 75
Nichols is 79
Eastwood is 80
The oldest one I listed is 87 Hiller
anyone older than that?
Nicholas Roeg – 81
Gosta Werner, who died in 2009, was born in 1908 and and directed his final film in 1998.
Alejandro Jodorwosky- 81 (working on a film now)
Gosta Werner, who died in 2009, was born in 1908 and and directed his final film in 1998.
By the way, Den, although he’s in the 87th year of his life, Hiller is 86. He won’t be 87 until his birthday this November. Woody is still 74, Eastwood is 79. Russell is 82. Common mistake when calculating ages.
Theo Angelopoulos is 74. He will be 75 in April.
Hi,
Jean-Luc Godard?
Shindo Kaneto (dir Onibaba, The Island..) born 1912, Mizoguchi’s assistant and great admirer, is still active.
As i’ve said elsewhere, Oliveira started filming Douro, Faina Fluvial in 1929- which means he’s now an active film-maker in 10 different decades
Miklós Jancsó is sitll making films. Born in 1921. He’ll be 89 this year.
Kaneto Shindo died Tuesday in Tokyo. He was 100 years old.
^Oh! gosh
Jonas Mekas is still working I think, born Christmas eve 1922
Alain Resnais is still directing. He was born June 3, 1922.
Ken Russell, Sidney Lumet and Claude Chabrol are, alas, no longer working. They’re dead.
Godard is 82 and he is making a 3D film now!
Kaneto Shindo died Tuesday in Tokyo. He was 100 years old.
A keening lament for Shindo.
ohhh
Dennis Brian
