Who should have directed Alice in Wonderland?

If you’ve seen the new Alice in Wonderland you’re aware of how Tim Burton simply ruined the story. He’s just plain untalented.

Who do you think should have directed Alice in Wonderland?

My vote goes for Fellini

(although Lars Von Trier would be interesting)

no one……it’s time to leave Lewis Carroll in peace after so many versions, from animations to stage plays.

ahmen to that dimitris
they should have stopped after the first disney one

probably after Svankmajer’s superb version as well.

let’s not forget the in-between television “epic” versions or that X-rated free adaptation i haven’t seen yet.

but it’s kind of like a christmas carol, they’re just going to kee remaking it as long as they can
and each new version is going to start getting worse and worse than the one theat came before it

Yes!

Takashi Miike. Just think about it.

Fellini is a good one too and Terry Gilliam would be an obvious choice.

Burton. I thought it was fine.

If Tim Burton had directed a film version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, we’d have a wonderful and fascinating film, instead of the underbaked NARNIA knockoff we’re stuck with.

No one, Svankmajer’s version is untouchable, and I could never see myself liking an “Alice” adaptation/re-make more….

Saw the Burton film yesterday-Hooooorrrrrriiiiiiibbbblllllleeeeee!

Who should have directed Alice in Wonderland? I don’t know.
But I want to see Marilyn Manson’s Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll. Either it’s good or bad.

The Svankmajer version is full of invention and surprise, but unfortunately all in the service
of rendering Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland a glum, tedious fever dream.
It’s Lewis Carroll as re-imagined by David Lynch and Franz Kafka.
Hard to believe someone could remove all the joy and life from that story, but Svankmajer did it.

I don’t think anyone has successfully adapted Carroll’s Alice stories to film.
If no CGI or animation were involved, I would like to see what might happen if Sophia Coppola
gave the stories a whirl.
Same goes for Wes Anderson and Jane Campion.

I would hate to see a production spiral downward into incoherence and self-indulgence,
so out goes Terry Gilliam.
And Tim Burton.

Would it be wrong to consider Michael Winterbottom or Jean-Pierre Jeunet?

I’m in agreement with letting “Alice” lie for a little while. That would have been best. Lewis Carroll’s classic has been diminished to fake-goth Hot Topic status with all the different re-tellings of the story over the years. That being said, if Tim Burton’s unsurprisingly blah film hadn’t been made, and you absolutely HAD to pick someone to make a version, I think it would be neat to see a film version of Robert Wilson’s stage production (the one for which Tom Waits recorded “Alice.”) Wilson himself could direct. Also, I don’t think it would be wrong to think about what a David Lynch “Alice” might look like. Pretty fun, I’d imagine!

Yea, I don’t think anyone should have. I’m just kinda burnt out on adaptations and remakes. More original work the better.

Holy shit. Quite an opening weekend: $116.3 million U.S. box office, $210.3 million worldwide.

There are many directors I would have loved to see adapting Carroll’s Alice books over Tim Burton. I would love see a female perspective on Alice in Wonderland and I can’t believe in the history of cinema there has never been an Alice in Wonderland directed by a female filmmaker ( I think)
I agree with Doctor Lemonglow and would go for either Jane Campion or Sofia Coppola, the two best contemporary female directors. Coppola with her penchant for beatiful cinematography/art direction/costume design and her key theme of lost girls living in hermetic bubbles always seemed like the perfect choice to me.
The idea of Lars Von Trier tumbling down the rabbit hole I have to admit sounds very intriguing, though If I could pick any auteur, alive or dead, to make a film of Lewis Carrol’s masterpiece it would have been Jean Cocteau, now that is what I call a perfect marriage of source material and director.

The lethal combination of the money hungry Disney corporation and the talentless goth ‘auteur’ Tim Burton was never going to produce a great work of art.

@Christopher Lundie

Why do you think Alice in Wonderland would need to have a female director to have a female perspective? Apparently no male director has ever made a film with a female perspective in it?

“Why do you think Alice in Wonderland would need to have a female director to have a female perspective? Apparently no male director has ever made a film with a female perspective in it?”

I have to assume he was simply expressing a desire to see the story interpreted by a female, not suggesting it would need one, considering the author of the source material.

I simply think this, like burtons version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, were just projects no one should have really done to start with. Leave worn out stories alone. Then again, I haven’t seen Alice yet… considering Lewis Carrol, and Tim Burton, I might end up liking it. In all reality, I will probably hate it tho lol.

I’m gonna have to go with Alejandro Jodorowsky…

@Gordon
Michael Haneke – that’d be so weird. Alice would be a disturbed teenaged girl whose mum suffers from Monchouzens Bi-Proxy and drugs her up, and, well you know the rest of the story.

@Herb
Michael Bay – That might be the only Michael Bay film I’d ever waste my money seeing.

Beside, we all know a reimagining is in order – my vote goes to Alan in Wonderland
