I’m better than Stanley Kubrick
What does that mean? Every director has his own way of directing, as long as a director is unique he’s great. Comparison is stupid.
Directors as Tarkovsky, Bresson or Tarr sure is better cinematographically, but i’ll forever claim that the enlightning ideers and unbelievable atmosphere in 2001 is the best the film medium has ever done. It isn’t cold or inhumane, it’s beyond mankind and that’s what makes it so amazing. It isn’t about a gay catholic marxist filmmaker going into a depression – it’s about man against the universe. Fantastic.
While I can think of many films that outdo or better Kubrick’s films individually, I can’t think of any other director whose entire body of work comes close to his. I’d argue he’s the greatest director of all time.
Stupid question. After a certain level of brilliance it is plain unfair to make lists.
What a naïve question… Who is better than who anyway, and at what?
Martin Scorsese.
Steven Spielberg!…..Just kidding,I find this question absurd to be honest.
^ Yes.
Fred Astaire was better than Stanley Kubrick if we’re talking about dancing. I myself am much better than Stanley Kubrick when it comes to being alive. However he’s much better than me at being dead.
Actually, McBean, Kubrick’s wife says he was a mean waltzer.
If you’re talking about who’s better than Kubrick at what Kubrick does… noone. Probabally because noone else really does what Kurick did, because noone else is Kubrick.
when it came to buying stationary no one was better then kubrick [its true, he loved the stuff]
My favorite Kubrick

The Who is better than Stanley Kubrick.
Who is apparently on first
@Mike Spence….Daft Punk! I friggin love those guys. I had no clue they had their own legos. That’s awsome. They need to come out with a new album before the sun explodes!
That’s a mean one Apursansar. I just loved it, ‘twas really funny but respectful at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
And to add something to the thread, for a long time I was convinced that SK was the best filmmaker ever, but then I realized that I had mostly seen “American” movies. Once I started watching more Asian and European cinema, It didn’t actually made me like SK’s films less, but it definitelly made me aware that there were many more up there.
Personally, and for lots of reasons, I started feeling that Tarkovsky was able to get to me in more ways than K ever did, and today, for me he is THE MAN.
But then again, it is very difficult to talk about filmmakers being better than others, it’s unfair, and it’s actually pointless.
p.s.
Everybody is better than Michael Bay.
I’m gonna have to deffinately dissagree with that statement…Alot of directors currently directing are not as good as Michael Bay. Leave that poor guy alone already.
Geez man……it actually made me feel bad about myself, and you’re right about the other directors. But sorry, when it comes to “that poor guy” it just comes natural…..I can’t help it….
I’m sure your atleast partly being sarcastic, but ok. It’s alright…
No sarcasm at all man. I totally agree with you in the fact that there are a few directors on the loose that are actually worse than Mr. Bay.
But I have to be honest, I have this natural hatred towards him and it comes out without noticing it.
@Hidden Behind the Screen: Whenever I see someone spell “alot” as one word on MUBI (ugh!), I usually send them a private message to correct them. There is no such word, although many people make this common mistake. (Of course, if you don’t believe me, try to find “alot” in a dictionary. As a teacher, I try to improve everyone’s abilities, so I’m offering this correction in the spirit of an educator.
Too often, though, when I write to someone privately, he/she insults me or tells me that somehow I am wrong. Others have said that (a) language is changing, so one can spell things anyway one likes, (b) I have psychological problems and a sadistic streak, © they are being “creative” or “poetic” with their spelling, (d) it’s the Internet and no one cares about spelling, or (e) “That’s the way I roll.” Whatever excuse or rationalization that’s used, I hope that all who read this will NEVER make this mistake again. You never know who will think the less of you if you can’t spell a simple phrase.
At least this way, in public, dozens of people get to learn that “a lot” is two separate words.
Frank, I recall you making this correction before. Is “alot” your #1 grammatical pet peeve?
At least the original question wasn’t “Whose better than Stanley Kubrick?”
“Whose better then Stanley Kubrick?” wood have been allot funnier.
It depends on your definition of a director. if it is visual acuity its hard to argue against him. he may meditate on human themes, he may deal with intresting things in a wide and microscopice light but to me he is fascinating but not the best. I like bergman, as far as depth of artistry and indsight and actually leaving viewers transformed in a substantial and postive manner by his work (if this is not what art is for than what) bergman is the best
Kubrick is the best at what he does, just as Scrosese is the best at what he does.
This discussion is senseless. There’s no way to compare directors of such high artistic quality as Stanley Kubrick. Would you say what painters are as good as Caravaggio or Vermeer. This isn’t a car race, this is art!
Dennis Brian
he is a fine director to be sure
but better ?
too many to list
