Why can't places outside of Hollywood make films everyone wants to see?

Too bad Hollywood exists, otherwise people would appreciative and know more about other cultures.

You’re joking, right?

That’s like saying ‘Too bad video games exist, or else people would read more books’.

People should know more about other cultures, yes, but Hollywood is certainly not to blame. If people had a deep desire to learn more about other cultures Hollywood would make movies about them.

Um, also, if you think that Hollywood is the be all and end all of “evil,” you’re a wee bit narrowly focused.

Hollywood is not the center of the universe.

Can’t say for certain, but I read Alex’s post as sarcasm.

Hm, I was recently thinking about just the opposite.

I made the mistake of watching In the Land of Blood and Honey. It was terrible! I know that it is not a proper Hollywood example, but I guess Angelina Jolie could be regarded as a contemporary Hollywood embodiment, thus considering the film a Hollywood attempt, but without their formulas and without the shining of their stars. So, by removing the formulas and the stars, I was thinking that “bare” Hollywood is probably even worse than a low budget, low brains other country mass production or a futile artistic attempt. At least before this film I was thinking that in Hollywood there was at least a kind of craftsmanship, hence a certain standard (not really artistic, maybe just technical), but I doubt it already.

@ Brad — yeah, that’s why I asked if he were joking. :D

I do not think is the evil, but there is plenty of people which is very easy to manipulate.
I love many Hollywood films. I hate star-system tho.

Ang Lee had done several English language movies before CTHD, same with Del Toro and Pans Labyrinth. So that obviously helped.

Many foreign directors want to work on big Hollywood productions, who are we to deny them their ambitions? If they stayed in their home country’s film industry the field would look quite different, and foreign cinema would benefit. Many actors originally from Canada, Europe, Australia are now considered Hollywood actors.

If you’ve ever wondered how English idioms, slang, etc get translated for foreign audiences and if they are really getting the movie the way you are, then of course the reverse must also be true.
