“not all great cinema is auteur cinema”- hate to disappoint MUBI,yes it is!!!!!
I’m also confused as to how many film lovers who’ve not heard of the site will be doing a google search for the word mubi.
Kenji, excellent point, I must admit.
“Movies Unite Bored Intellectuals”
>with the database now featuring everything from Michael Bay to Michael Cera
??? what’s in that database?
i think most people were aware of the market aspect, they don’t need reminding.
Crazy baby talk name.
You can read about the rational here:
Basically the founder of The Auteurs felt that people were too dumb to understand that Auteurs has a meaning specific to film. So he hired some ad agencies to come up with a cute catchy name so he could have more visitors – and one would assume more money. He didn’t ask any of the loyal people who read, participate or use his site on a daily basis what name they might suggest. It’s just silly – but typically corporate.
BTW Budweiser will be changing it’s name to ‘Dwink’.
i think its safe to say, these are not considered ‘auteurs’ by the general users here.
clearly, they do need reminding, considering everyone freaking out in a tizzy over this.
My 2 cents on the name change
That name change is useless and non sense for me.But as you already did,can you also change the fact that people’s personal film lists entry on movies page that we become ‘fan’?And separate lists from movies? We can not like everthing do we?Otherwise it’s becoming a commercial website and not a cinephile one,and then doesn’t interest me at all.
i simply pinpointed LA-DI-DA’s snobbish comment and suddenly, i’m moderated by someone.
i didn’t even curse.
down with the snobs. and the MUBI lovers.
People get paid to come up with that name?
Fair enough, but Mubi is a terrible name.
As long as Mubi can play the for-TV edit of “Finding Nemo” for $3, you’ll hear no complaints from me. Pixar is my favorite canopy auteur, anyway, any day. Throw in some commercials for a cell phone or even a car, and you got yourself another dollar from me. All I’m saying.

i said smartass, not fucker. ;)
actually, either it’s ironic or not, it’s not a useful comment on who’s pompous and who’s not, it can easily be a misunderstood interpretation on her behalf (sorry for the he)
you guys still haven’t switched the typeface/dot combo issue…?
For the people who are already members, MUBI is a terrible choice of a name. I don’t like it either, and much prefer The Auteurs, but for those who have never heard of The Auteurs, MUBI is just another website with an easy-to-remember name. They will not give a fuck about its name because they will not have gone through the apparently tragic ordeal of the site changing its name. (Yeah, yeah, yeah, what a world, what a world…)
I guess it’s more about the title than the name, but I don’t suppose there were any major issues with the original name… so, really, why change?
I think we can all look at the name change by using the words of the immortal Kenyon Martin:
“It is what it is.”
This reminds me of this.
Arguing that many film enthusiasts do not know the meaning of the word ‘auteur’ seems futile in the Information Age, with Wikipedia but a few clicks away. I can’t believe ‘MUBI’ is the product of nine months’ work. Next, all posts using ‘cinephile’ will be moderated.
Well, I have stated before I just don’t like the suffix ‘phile’
^ haha. what’s the answer to every question? $$$ oh well. i love this site. =)
To be completely honest, I could care less what the name of this website is, so long as I’m still able to connect with people around the globe with incredible movie taste and find out about movies that I, otherwise, wouldn’t have a chance of ever hearing about. Now, if we start deleting any films or people from the website because we’re trying to be snobbish, I’d be pretty pissed. Even if it’s Michael Bay or Michael Cera. One man’s trash is another man’s auteur. One man’s MUBI is another man’s theauteurs.
I just don’t want to change the name of my list to “Max J. Pell’s Submissions to MUBI”
Knowing of The Auteurs as it was could just be a mark of seniority and superiority for all of us.
“I remember when.”
This is how this guy says Movies.
They’re catering to this guy.
Max,I posted Mooby on another thread. I think the golden cow applies well
