Why do all the great and highly talented Anglo-American actors work in such mediocre films unlike many of their continential European counterparts

What? is great Dimitris? really? ;-)

From what i recall, it was a bloody mess.

The late Annie Giradot for example made her career based on films with commercial impact but no so much quality with unknown and mostly untalented directors like Roger Vadim, Laslo Benedek, Claude Lelouch, Michel Boisrond, Denys de La Patellière, Alfredo Giannetti, Macel Cravene, Gérard Oury, Franco Rossi, Robert Thomas, François Villiers, Sergio Corbucci, Philippe de Broca, Edouard Molinaro, Gérard Pirès, Jean-Pierre Blanc, André Cayette, Philippe Clair, and so on… There’s only a few exceptions with filmakers like Mario Monicelli, Luchino Visconti, Marco Ferreri, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, or in her last years Michael Haneke…

Sergio Corbucci, Philippe de Broca

These two mediocre? Really? Some of the directors above you mention for all their commercial flair (Vadim, Molinaro) they were more enjoyable and distinct than the Finchers and Bessons of today’s cinematic universe! To think you appreciate Gondry so much makes these guys look like Eisensteins!!! Oh, and Corbucci and de Broca were masters in their respective fields. Are you serious? Oury who worked in several films with Louis de Funes, a MASTER comedian is junk you mean? On the same level as what, Farrelly Brothers? Please…

John Wayne IF we assume he’s a great actor has worked in worse film projects in the spectrum of his career….and don’t tell me McLaglen and Allan Dwan were great directors or anything…and there are those anti-commie films he participated in too…..

Europe > Hollywood, Bollywood, Nollywood, end of story.

What? Joks is one of the best films of Polanski, almost all his features up until Pirates are great to spectacular pieces of work. Please don’t tell me you’re a Pianist fan as well….What? is better than the 3 Sean Penn films I’ve watched, BY FAR, hahahaha.

Let me also remind most people here that Europe is NOT as most people think. There are LEGENDS from all its corners, from Portugal to Serbia to Greece to Denmark to Czech Republic. It’s not all about some “names”.

DIM: to me What? is an admirable failure. He tried to make an anarchic sex comedy and basically failed imo. it’s not funny, and it gets real boring after the first half an hour imo.

Definitely better than Pirates though,i ’ll give you that ;-0

What? is top 5 Polanski and one of Mastroianni’s most exhilarating acting rides. Pirates is superior to anything Polanski made in the past 20+ years. Polanski’s late career is crap, sorry Joks.

^^^Pirates is a dud Dim you crazy bastard! ;-) I’m not huge on Polanski’s late career films either, but i’d take ‘Death And The Maiden’ over that piece of shit anyway! ;-0

Death and the Maiden is superficial “theatrical” banality. Pirates has smirks and sarcasm, Maiden has a washed-up actress. Camp wins. Only Pianist makes the cut of decency.

Ironically, these late films might be some unfortunate moments for some fine actors and actresses like Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Kingsley.

The Pianist was really good. But none of Polanksi’s other recent works that I’ve seen is really worthwhile.Maybe nice and entertaining, but poor compared to his earlier films.

Sergio Corbucci “a master” in his field.
Two generations of drive-in movie fans (especially those lucky few who enjoyed 5-for-1 Fridays and Car-Load Nite) wouldn’t argue with that.
Is SUPER FUZZ in the works for Criterion?

First of all, I choose the great roles, and if none of these come, I choose the mediocre ones, and if they don`t come, I choose the ones that pay the rent.

If you`re a movie actor, you`re on your own – you cannot control the stage. The director controls it.

^ Michael Caine said those. Silly lad.
