Total Recall disappoints, weekend goes to Rises
Not all that surprising but on the other hand it reminds me of the article Matt Parks shared somewhere (that I now cannot find) about how as individual blockbuster receipts skyrocket, so do the number of flops. I sort of thought Total Recall would do better than this and the usual response is to say, “Well I mean, it’ll do well on DVD!” but the original already has its established place as a cult piece of video nasty.
Don’t have anything to say about Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I was actually recommended the books so flipped through one once, if I had children I’d get them reading them in a heartbeat ‘cause they’re silly and fun and heartfelt and soulful, but I wouldn’t know anything about the movies or their quality. I had seen Ramona and Beezus a while back and though children’s movies are getting better at putting playful visual effects in to create a sort of notebook margin imaginary world it doesn’t necessarily make the adaptations’ acting or storytelling much better than they’ve traditionally been.

Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biehl in the same movie . . .it’s tempting.
