Wide Release Films June 1 2012

I will see Piranah 3DD in part because the first one was watchable, The Hoff is in this one. Danielle Panabaker might be nude and most importantlyJohn Galaghur directed (He won project Greenlight and used it to make Feast 1-3, three of the better gore films of the last decade).

A first time director takes on Snow White with Kirsten Stewart. Seems Stewart still craves the mainstream while Pats went all indie. No one will outdo Disney so no reason to watch really.

Saw Gulager on project greenlight and loved watching him in the show. Have yet to see any of the films to come out of that contest, but I have the feeling that he may have not wanted his career to end up where it is now directing a new Piranha movie. But whatever, it’ll probably make a shitload of money because it has gore and boobs in it.

I enjoyed Piranha 3D as well. And I was hoping this new one would be fun. But a friend of mine saw it several months ago and he said it was terrible. And coming from him, a guy who sees everything and likes most movies, this is saying something. So I’ll probably avoid, especially since it apparently lacks all the fun that the first one had.

As for Snow White, are people really going to see this movie?

Will be checking out “Piranha 3DD” on VOD June 1st (why doesn’t the fim have a MUBI page?). I wasn’t a huge fan of the original film, but found the experience marginally entertaining, but found it a bit too vacuous and reptitive. This one probably won’t be better, but still seeing it.

But how the hell are you gonna release a 3D film, or a 3DD film, to VOD? I hear it might get some sort of a theatrical release, but I’ll just watch it at home.

This snow white thing is a prime example of the christopher nolan style of filmmaking infecting other genres. with any luck, in the future his style will be considered campy. However I find the creature designs which have a jim henson feel alluring. The casting of the dwarves is also interesting

Ian McShane as Beith Johnny Harris as Quert Bob Hoskins as Muir Toby Jones as Coll Eddie Marsan as Duir Brian Gleeson as Gus Ray Winstone as Gort Nick Frost as Nion

also that new universal logo is a big improvement, should be permanent

There was a time when all these dark fairy tale adaptations would have been right on my roster of shit to see ASAP. Nowadays the idea just makes me tired.

“I want her heart beating… with blooooood!”

….. Right. So, next goal on the to-do list, my queen?

How many Snow White movies are they planning on releasing!??!! This is no.3 right? and they all look shit too.

Steve Pulaski

@Joks, there have been two, so far, this year; “Huntsman” and the Julia Roberts “Mirror, Mirror.” I don’t know if they’re planning a third one, but really, it’s getting old.

Santino

I’m sure Catherine Breillat is planning one at some point. lol

Drew.

I’m annoyed with Breillat. She’s gonna need to make something great to earn back my love after The Sleeping Beauty. So damn disappointing.

I’ll see the new Snow White if the reviews are great, otherwise I’ll pass.

Santino

I think her plan was to do a fairy tale trilogy although I don’t remember what the third movie was.

Jirin

Yeah, I don’t see the point of adult adaptations of children’s stories. I think they just wrote their own fantasy movie and adjusted plot points to a recognizeable franchise for more box office.

Drew.

Well the “children’s stories” are actually very adult in their original form, so I think there is a wealth of material in fairy tales. They’re just rarely done well.

Joe Wright’s Little Mermaid is probably my most anticipated movie of the next five years though.

Santino

@Drew, that is a joke, right?

Drew.

It’s hyperbolic but it’s not a joke. I’ve wanted a new adaptation of that great fairy tale forever, and I love Joe Wright. Not to mention he has a personal connection to the material because of his dad.

But yeah sure Scorsese’s Silence and some others probably surpass it.

Jirin

Or they could, y’know, write their own fairy tales. Worked for James Cameron.

@Den-

Panabaker is not nude in 3DD. She said she wasn’t in an interview a few months back

Then again, Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture, Girls) recently Said she was a virgin in an interview lol

:p

As for me, I really hope Moonrise Kingdom plays near me this week. Wes Anderson hasn’t made a great film since Tennenbaums IMO but this one looks good.

Santino

Snow White is actually getting some decent reviews?

Ugh. This means I might have to check it out. Crap.

Drew.

Damsels in Distress got a 76% and you didn’t bother checking it out…

The Rotten Tomatoes Gods don’t control you!!

But, personally, good reviews will definitely result in me watching this.

Santino

It depends on the film. If a mainstream blockbuster gets shitty reviews, I’ll continue to ignore it. But if it gets great reviews, I might give it a look (last year’s Planet of the Apes is a good example. I had no interest in seeing it, thought it was going to suck, but the reviews were good so I checked it out and was pleasantly surprised).

I could tell you some horror stories about Whit Stillman…

Speaking of which, there was an interview with him in Film Comment. I stopped reading and threw the magazine across the room after I read this:

“I can’t say I admire sex, lies, and videotape and Steven Soderbergh’s sensibilty…I know other people talk about independent filmmakers like John Cassavetes, but I can’t say that he was an influence…I actually don’t value cinematic references because I think the key to what I am doing most of the time is literary. It’s narrative, and it’s comedy, and film is far less important than fiction and theater.”

Just typing that out kinda made me gag a little.

Drew.

Hehehe that’s so lovably pretentious it could be out of the mouth of one of his characters.

Santino

lol

Santino

I think that’s part of my trouble with his films. Whereas most people might look at his films and characters as being a satire on the wealthy, he is very much sincere in trying to showcase a positive side to the rich.

Dennis Brian

Stilman was obviously inspired by Perelman and Salinger

and Wes Anderson may feel the same way since Royal is a direct rip-off of Salinger’s Glass stories

JapeMan

@Dennis-

Just saw Piranha 3DD. No nudity from Panabaker and it was far inferior to #1 but it was still fun lol

Dennis Brian

oh I just asked you this on another thread

thanks for the heads up

Steve Pulaski

I watched “Piranha 3DD” yesterday. Absolute trash. Repetitive, obnoxious, crass, and juvenile. Hasselhoff couldn’t even save it. I recall laughing twice when Ving Rhames came on screen. Other than that, it was horrendous.

tomas.roges

Seeing Huntsman tomorrow morning. Hope it’s decent.
