That’s funny.
JR and Blue K: Yeah I do agree that the topic is kind of meaningless but I guess in this forum, since we do have quite an abundance of space, we should just let anyone discuss whatever they want as long as they are not pointless listing threads.
Extremely unlikely.
The only ways I could see it happening is if Avatar actually turns out to be a masterpiece, or it’s so horrendously bad that people will give the word of mouth that “Oh my god, you have to see how ridiculous this movie is.”
Funny, films don’t need to be good to generate revenue, they just need word of mouth to get the films name into peoples heads.
I don’t know, but I was “grossed out” by the trailer. I-Robot meets the Matrix. Blah.
Avatar looks like shit.
Honestly, I think AVATAR looks pretty awful.
37 posts on this, huh?
Got something better to do KJ?
Apparently the budget is $500 million!
I feel bad because Cameron is just setting himself up for disappointment. As some have already stated Titanic reached such a wide demographic along with other factors that created a film that really isn’t going to topped for a long time, especially not by a pretty specific audience film like Avatar.
I don’t see anyone over 18 really dying to go see this film, and the characters or setting don’t really seem marketable enough for long term income. With how bad the game is going to fail (no matter how much Cameron states to the contrary), I think the entire Avatar train will go off rails not long after the movie is outNo it won’t. Not to mention they are going to re-release “Titanic” in 3D soon which means all of the NEW ticket sales will be added onto the previous amount that “Titanic” made.
No way.It won’t come even close to Titanic’s sucess.Maybe it will be a better movie(ok,that’s not extremely difficult),but it will never have the universal appeal of Titanic. For a thousand of reasons.
no it won’t. It was just a phenomonon
it definitely wont.
Absolutely not. Movie looks SOOO STOOOPID!!!!!!
No way. ‘Avatar Day’ (the free fifteen minutes back in August) was quite the letdown.
Yeah, I for one went to see Titanic and my parents bought the movie ticket for me. I will not be seeing Avatar. Not interested… Cameron’s about thirteen years too late.
Good article in The New Yorker last week about James Cameron and Avatar.
“I think a lot of people here will be eating there words in a few months. Booya”
It looks like my prediction might be coming true. Anyone here still think it’s a joke that Avatar might catch up to Titanic? Have you seen the trendline of the box office worldwide?
…
crickets
Avatar tops 1 billion worldwide? About to pass Dark Knight?
http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/01/03/box-office-avatar-soars-past-1-billion-worldwide/
AVATAR now at $1.1 BILLION worldwide, making it the #2 alltime box office film, and it seems to be on course to bring down Titanic.
Why ‘Avatar’ Could Out-Earn ‘Titanic’

I like you Tom. You’re one dedicated motherfucker. Plus you like Mulholland Dr., Barry Lyndon, and Terrence Malick! :)
i hate that cameron has this ego as a blockbuster maker
and time and again it turns out to be justified
nothing worse than justified ego

exactly :(

Tom, you just gave me another reason why I should stand by what I believe (even if it doesn’t outgross titanic, I’m sure more than half the negative posters on here have pissed their pants). Muchas Gracias.

If you don’t care, then don’t post on the thread, Josh.
Who cares that you don’t care?
