WILL IT EVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY?

Seriously…I get visions of the original reels being tucked away in a shelf in some dusty closet in Paris… I know about the Italian VHS and the recent screenings in Los Angeles, but does ANYONE have any idea if this movie even has a chance to be released or seen by a wide audience?

released…probably..in the distant future…. (that can also mean 100 years from now)

“or seen by a wide audience?”

it depends on which country…for the most part, the privilege will go to the most famous “cinematically speaking” countries and it sounds reasonable for showings in major festivals,IF most of the famous festivals decide for a Rivette retrospective (highly unlikely since he hasn’t even won any major award besides critical recognition of course)

There have been rumors about Criterion releasing something by Rivette, so it could be Out 1. I wouldn’t bet on it, but there’s always hope.

I think I’d rather have Celine and Julie on DVD. Much more replay value and a film I like more anyway. :)

stumbled upon this in random film-based YouTube browsing. It is very much gold.

Brian, Celine and Julie has been available through the BFI for a couple of years now. I too like it slightly more, but both are masterpieces.

I still have DVD-R copies of Out 1 with english subtitles if anyone’s interested. They’re not doing much good sitting in my room! :P

Gringo Tex… where? When? Link!!!

Polarisdib, I’ll throw it back on ebay if you’re interested… or if you’d prefer to work it out some other way, that’s cool. I’m only looking for shipping and postage costs.

On Facebook a few days ago. I don’t have the link.

From Criterion’s Facebook page:

Michel Jobert:
“Criterion, I’d like to know if there is any news regarding the status of Out 1? I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but I did not get a response from you.

And, I would like to know if you are planning to release other Rivette films such as L’Amour fou and Celine and Julie Go Boating?

Thank you for your time and have a good day."

“We thought your post was answered by the person who posted the last big post. The latest is tht we’re going to try to get it done, and about seventy-five people on Facebook all agreed to buy 100 copies each. But really, we will get it done, even though it probably won’t be our first Rivette…”

Well that’s great news.

That is great news! Hopefully all those region 2 haters who are aching for Celine and Julie will buy a couple of copies of it so Criterion doesn’t get nervous about the expense involved in releasing Out 1.

That’s right, I’m resurrecting all the Out 1 threads tonight. It may not have been perfect, but it would move up to five stars from moi if it had at least a DVD-quality restoration with professional subtitles. We could see so much more of the actor’s expressions, understand so much more of the dialogue, and actually appreciate the 16mm photography, if those of us who can’t make it to retrospectives had something of better quality than the Italian VHS rip that can be found on any tracker worth its salt.
