A separate streaming links thread will be started by tomorrow as soon as more films are up, but people can meanwhile post the links on here or send them to Kenji and me. All of my Indian selections should be completely uploaded in the next two or three days.

Kenji certainly expected Fellini´s “8 1/2” from you and decided to attack you with his biggest guns. It´s going to be a tough match.

You´re planning to see or have seen all three German films but none of the Indian selections, Law?

Law

This is another very exciting round but I was hoping to get a link to Salam Cinema.

Apursansar, Indian cinema does not excite me too much for some reason. I bet they are brilliant but Law will have to force himself to be in the mood for love first.

I still think I have a shot. My issue is that my film that was a “sure thing” is now the one most likely to lose.

I’ve been very forgiving to Bernardo and Michelangelo in this tournament, so hopefully they will give me a nice reward.

I’m not wrong in thinking that everyone thinks The Human Condition is one of the greatest films of all time, right? Hell, I recently bought it, because of all the buzz on the Auteurs.

Law

And before anyone disses Blow Up, Blow Up is the true greatest film ever (since we’re doing that) in its unrelenting study of reality that proves so true to cinema and reality (ironically).

KJ

Oh man, Italy is going down! Seriously. That Japan line-up is staggering. Mt. Fuji-type heaviness. Fugeddaboutit. How Iran/Africa shakes out will also be something to wait for.

apursansar

Blow Up is one of those titles I will definitely try to watch again before voting. The first time I saw it didn´t it leave the same impact on me as his alienation tetralogy, but I´m sure the film deserves another watch.

Law

Are there any links now? I have time for something short before bed.

Apursansar: I saw it twice before I loved it, then I watched it with a commentary track and solidified my trust in its greatness. I should try and upload that commentary track… It’s not the best commentary track but can be good if someone doesn’t “get” the film.

KJ

Bed? Where are you, Law?

Law

The sunny island of Singapore.

Here is the link for Sembene´s “Black Girl” which is only about 60 minutes long.

Law

Thank you. Marc! This is the Sembene I have been waiting for anyway.

EDIT: My internet messed up so not enough time for Black Girl tonight, but I urge all who have 60 minutes to tide to watch it.

The Indian choices are wonderful, for anyone hasn’t seen them each of those are highly recommend, but I see a brutal opponent in Germany and am frightened!!

Yikes!!

“And before anyone disses Blow Up, Blow Up is the true greatest film ever (since we’re doing that) in its unrelenting study of reality that proves so true to cinema and reality (ironically).”

there is NO greatest film ever, hehe…but i can agree that whoever disses Blow Up,will have to face the wrath of Law and mine!

having not seen the Human Condition from the Japanese team (and i actually love all the Italian films, shoot me you Antonioni haters!) i shall begin from that….it better be great to beat Bicycle Thieves, haha.

i’ll leave that match aside for now…and i really have to applaud the best pairing in this round,Iran v Africa…Barakat’s film MUST be a surprise because i hold Day I Became a Woman in very high esteem!

Filmy

I have to reiterate the mt.Fuji’ness of Japan’s entries.

Towering!!
Lethal!!
Supreme!!

and of course, Sublime!!

Myra

Unfortunately I don’t think there are Eng subs for that version of Black Girl on YT. I don’t know if Blue has the film too and is planning on upping it, but if he doesn’t and I don’t run into difficulties, I can try to up that since it’s only 60 min, with subs.

Hey, where’s that Tarkovsky film I was dreading from Team Russia?!

Some of those matches look brutal… :‘( I don’t know how I’m going to decide…

Law

There is a very nice theme park near Mt. Fuji. The best theme park experience in my life. Anyone been to it?

Dimitris Psachos

“Some of those matches look brutal…”

95% of the WC matches were brutal all along, hahahaha.

McBean

Just wanted to clarify something. I was under the impression there was a running time limit for entries. The Human Condition clocks in at about 10 hours. Was the idea abandoned? And would I therefore be allowed to submit Berlin Alexanderplatz in the next round if I wanted to?

Dimitris Psachos

“And would I therefore be allowed to submit Berlin Alexanderplatz in the next round if I wanted to?”

personally,i have more than enough time to finish any spare films i have to from the Cup and our Greek TV will be projecting Berlin Alexanderplatz as a mini-series starting today…so in case you qualify,i won’t have any trouble voting for that match on time :)

but really,i didn’t know we abandoned it as well…

Myra

Well Dimitris, I told myself I wouldn’t give out any ties as long as I’ve seen both films, but there’s one particular pairing so far in Iran vs. Africa that I know will tug at my heartstrings more than any other. :(

Law

I think it’s somewhat unfair to Italy because most of The Human Condition fans will have seen Bicycle Thieves while most of the Bicycle Thieves fans will not be able to see The Human Condition because of accessiblity and length issues.

Dimitris Psachos

your City of Life and Death v Mother line-up doesn’t look easy to decide either ;)

curiously enough,Chuan’s film is the most recent film in the World Cup as of yet….i don’t remember which was the oldest produced film so far though that participated..

we didn’t have many votes on that Satatango match as well…but look it this way Law,no way for repetitions next time, hooray!

Law

It would have been my Meiles in this round. ):

greg x

Is it just the first film of the Human Condition trilogy? Or is it intended to be all three films in one?

Myra

Luckily I don’t have to vote in any of those myself Dimitris! I like Mother quite a bit too. Daybreak is going to have to impact people for them to vote it over Commissar as well…

I hope I have time for the ones I haven’t yet seen — which applies to all three of India’s selections!

Edit: Do we know the dates for these matches yet?
