Ok good :) Porco Rosso is another masterpiece. and so is Totoro but I think Kenji already used that film in a previous match.

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro? It’s very enjoyable, although it doesn’t really have the feel of his later works. Kiki’s Delivery Service is a favorite of mine, along with Mononoke, Spirited, and Totoro. Castle in the Sky and Howl’s are just a hair below those, and Porco Rosso and Nausicaa a touch beneath the second group, although to be fair, I saw Porco Rosso in the English version and Michael Keaton and the rest of the voice cast are awful.

I keep meaning to watch Lady Snowblood, but I saw Lady Snowblood 2 already and I didn’t dig it too much, other than some moments here and there so I keep putting off watching the first part.

Porco Ross in the english version is awful, but in its original it is a masterpiece. Generally Miyazakis films should be watched in the original version.

This tournament is rigged!

Laputa Castle in the Sky was partly inspired by Miyazaki’s visit to Wales, ha ha

I´m in fact thinking about the Hindi classic “A Lonely Elephant Weeps at Dawn”, Dimitris.

Porco had a terrible English dub. The Japanese actors are much better, especially Akio Ohtsuka as Donald, the American pilot hah and of course Porco

I’m sure you’re right about that, Rüdiger, since that’s normally how I would watch them, actually I usually watch both the English and Japanese versions to get the wider range of dialogue strategies. I’ll have to give Porco another chance sometime since I didn’t have the chance to see it in its original form the first time.

“Generally Miyazakis films should be watched in the original version.”

generally,i condemn dubbing to the pits of cinematic damnation!

McBean

I agree with Dimitris on this one – I can’t abide dubbing under any circumstances.

Rumple, for what it’s worth,i still can’t believe Paris, Texas got more love than Herzog and Fassbinder perfections!!!

if it were An American Friend,i’d understand it…..

Dimitris, as an old hand (over 20 years) at collecting lists of top film selections and international polls etc it didn’t surprise me at all; not everyone shares your taste. Anyway, i love Alice in the Cities even more

i guess i’m the only one who loves Oharu more than Sansho then, old hand, hehe ;)

Kenji

well, Oharu has plenty of supporters- Sight and Sound top 100, Aquarello #1, Derek Malcolm’s top 10, John Kobal’s top 100 movies poll, BBC centenary 100…-, but Sansho usually pips it.

Dimitris Psachos

that Sight and Sound must be the Godard of cine-polls,ha!

Kenji

Sansho, Story of Late Chrysanthemums and Ugetsu also made the critics’ 100 and higher than Oharu.

“Sansho, Story of Late Chrysanthemums and Ugetsu also made the critics’ 100 and higher than Oharu”

yes Kenji, that’s why i also can’t believe how Paris, Texas got more love yesterday, hehe.

funny note: Paris, Texas won the Golden Palm the year when Angelopoulos’ Voyage to Cythera was nominated as well…and in my humble opinion,Angelopoulos should have won over Wenders…by a looong shot!

Agree. And think that my country is famous because here ’everything’s dubbed’.

:(

Kenji

well i’ve not seen Cythera and no doubt Theo would agree with you, he wasn’t too chuffed when (the awful) Underground beat Ulysses’ Gaze, but he got his just reward for Eternity and a Day

Dimitris Psachos

haha,i’d have used Underground (possibly) in the last 8 in case i passed because it’s the last major Kusturica film,i haven’t seen Ulysses though.

really now…even you yourself will admit once you see Cythera that not only Paris, Texas’ vastness is no match for Cythera’s nostalgia, but you’ll realize Eternity was mostly an “honorary” award due to all the previous losses.

i think Dirk Bogard (then president of the committee) probably liked Dean Stockwell in the beginning of Wenders’ film too much,if you catch my drift ;)
