FRANCE AND HUNGARY QUALIFY FOR THE LAST 16, Had the film Love/Szerelem received one less vote v Oasis, South Korea would have won the match and qualified instead
Congratulations to France and Hungary for qualifying. I think that a draw is a perfect result for the last match, and I´m glad that Oasis finally got some love from voters, since it´s definitely one of the most unusual and sensitive love stories I´ve seen so far.
Wow, that was so close! Congrats to France and Hungary indeed. What a great match between South Korea and Hungary, with both films about love resulting in a tie in the third pairing.
Ozufan made superb selections throughout, whereas Rumplesink was playing a canny game, not bothered over losing to France, just aiming to qualify and targeting this one, so it was very exciting. Denmark are doing something similar in group 3, which may just work for them
Apu,i think Oasis and Autumn Sun win the “Technical Prize for Best Love Stories of the World Cup” :)
I think overall justice was done, as Hungary had a consistent strong line-up, but Rumplesink’s tactics almost paid off. This reminds me of the 1958 football world cup when Wales got through to the 1/4 finals in a close one against Hungary, unbeaten after draws and the one win. Hungary had been very unlucky not to win the 54 world cup, a great team, there’s a guy here in his 70s from Hungary who power walks all over, and i lent him Szerelem dvd, i was just thinking of all this while walking Bryn the dog, and then how Hungary’s kicking Wales’ star player out of the competition cost us the world cup. So i’m not sure i should be so well disposed to Hungary after all, their cinema interests me, a pity we haven’t had Andrew Hoellering participating in the world cup here
count me as one of the few who share your passion Kenji abut the actual World Cup and all the classic match-ups and results and collisions…
but also count me as one of the detractors of its comparison to our World Cup,because in all honesty,i’m one of the first (if not THE first person) who wants Germany,Brazil,Argentina,Italy and all the other famous teams and rosters to be eliminated by the end of the first rounds…
and i don’t want to hijack this thread with Football World Cup statistics but i’m kind of disappointed from the 3 latest World Cups, even if i do have plenty of complaints about older match-ups and injustices (it’s obvious the final between Argentina and Germany was set up for the German pride after the Wall fell),the 3 latet Cups as a whole have been thoroughly distorting of what the real results should be…
in short,i’m simply mentioning his because as much as this Cup looks like the actual football (aka soccer) World Cup,we must in no way confuse the parallelisms of art and sports :)
Thanks for the voting everybody, and a great selection of films by the other managers in this group. I must be the luckiest manager in the WC competition, as a swing of a single vote in the match up between La Belle et la Bete v Father and especially Oasis v Love would have given this group a very different look and seen the Magical Magyars crash and burn. Such are the slim margins between these quality films.
Congrats to France and Hungary.
I’m very happy Hungary made it, but I also wanted to see New Zealand win.
i think France needs to prove it can play with a much more unexpected team in the next rounds unless the Godard-Bresson-Renoir hype win the majority’s heart.
if Korea had two more masterpieces in the first round like Goryeojang was,the final results (as Ozufan stated) would have been really different…
I agree with Dimitris.
Give Garrel,Duras,Grandrieux,Denis,Malraux,Podalydes,Carax,Varda,Rohmer,Carné a chance, it would be a lot more tense and suspensful I suppose.
hey,two women in a row,i think so far, women have been doing more than masterful with their teams such are Belgium or Hungary,so why not,it would be really refreshing to see more female film-makers opposite the male counterparts,Von Trotta,Martel and Wertmuller can be used for their respective teams.
(in case they pass)
Agreed. Give them a chance! Fire the coach!
