That a film like Wavelength nearly won out gives me hope for the future. That it didn’t makes me weep with existential angst.

Brazil very unfortunate, with such a close votes difference.

I think this means Spain, group winners, play Italy, Group 4 runners up, next. Germany, runners up, play Taiwan, group 4 winners next, but i’ve lost track. Anyone confirm the draw please. Managers of Spain and Germany very uncertain for future participation, i’ll try Joriah, not heard from Justin

“Germany, runners up, play Taiwan, group 4 winners next, but i’ve lost track”

i’m expecting to see some rough choices from Germany in case it IS against Taiwan, because arguably Taiwan is THE favorite of the match (and one of the Cup favorites come to think of it)

Joriah has been active recently Kenji,as for Vicari and Dan…………………………..

That a film like To Be or Not to Be nearly lost gives me fear for the future. That it didn’t makes me wipe my perspiring brow with relief- unless i get knocked out later by Germany.

Glad I voted for To Be or Not to Be =)).

Narrative cinema wins over Wavelength.

narrative cinema will never die Kenji,it’s the debate against experimental cinema that we must be afraid of :(

whatever,i’m dreaming of the day when narrative/experimental will be joint terms and there will never be juxtaposition indifferences anymore about one or the other….but for now:

Serbian Experimental Cinema in Salonika Festival (in two weeks),here i come!!!

yeah, i’m all for experimenting, esp with time, space, perceptions, i was being a little facetious as To Be or Not to Be is so brilliant imo, and we must beware over-intellectualising in an age when nazism is on the rise, and when there’s the fox’s lesson for the little prince. 20s and 30s avant-garde European films were playfully (as well as intellectually) pushing back the boundaries, Duchamp’s fountain was earlier, but concept art since has often been a (very derivative) charlatan

^ I was looking at some of Edward Weston’s photographs at the museum the other day and one of them was a photo of a toilet.

Just there, removed from its environment and he gave it the power and grace of a piece of Greek statuary. Didn’t bother to check were it falls in relation to “Fountain” but they must have been around the same time.

Spain is obviously the powerhouse in this grouping. Whatever country faces them is in for a tough match. It will be very interesting to see what Germany puts up next. I am sorry that Justin V. no longer participates on the forum, because I would have expected some great Fassbinder films from him for team Germany. In any case, congratulations to Spain and Germany for advancing.

Canada now joins all the other English language countries in being eliminated, even though they have a strong and vibrant French speaking culture. Guess this confirms that ‘art-house’ in our cinephile minds still means non-English language cinema – ie, foreign language films. Don’t jump me, Dimitris, for using the term foreign language, as I am using it here in its old-fashioned context – ironically. We all know world cinema is here to stay – at least in this event – and that English language film is no longer welcomed – ha!

The managers for both Canada and Brazil did the best they could. We are all now exposed to some great Brazilian directors, like Rocha, thanks to this event. I would also like to note that Canada went out with a bang – or rode the waves – with Wavelength. This was one of those defining moments in this event that got everyone thinking, whether they liked the film of not.

Congratulations to Spain and Germany, although I consider it sad that neither of both managers participated in the voting process and seem to be interested in continuing to manage their team. I´m wondering wether Grey Daisies might be up to managing the German team in case that Justin Vicari passes out, his knowledge of German cinema certainly surpasses that of most of us.

oh Kenji,Kenji :)

and to be honest,i really wanted either Canada or Brazil to come off alongside Spain,Germany seemed very….dry…
