Dimitris Psachos

it’s a demanding work that i’ll check out again in the future.
in case you pass and have decided to use Miyazaki, the animator, hehe…then he will be your third color feature in that competition!

(come to think of it,how many b/w and how many color films have been used so far?)

Kenji look, if you should lose remember that Sweden lost 1-0 to Brazil in the semi-finals of world cup 94’. I was but 7, and that night left a scar on my heart.

Kenji

my nerves could have done without seeing a new post! Yeah and Wales lost 1-0 to Brazil in the 58 world cup 1/4 final in Sweden and they’ve not been back in the WC since or in my lifetime, and 77, 85, 93 and 05 were heartbreakers too, i have those scars- and worst in youth

well, when exactly will the match be finishedOr are we waiting for a late vote to make the result

Kenji

we have 8 minutes left, in the event of a draw 1 1/2- 1 1/2 by pairings the match will be decided on total number of votes

Wow, it seems that one more vote can decide the match. I´m curious to see which of the teams India is going to meet in the final match.

Well,I’m in Greece,so maybe a bit confused, but I thought that the matches here ended at 6 in the afternoon. Now it’s 8.Probably I was wrong,or something has changed.By the way, what will happen in the case of a drawWill the goal difference make the winner

Kenji

“Paul just ended the game..”

Arsaib could have done the same ;)

(told ya Kenji about After the Rain)

Kyoko Kagawa: Isn’t Life Disappointing?
Setsuko Hara: Yes it is

congrats to Myra! It couldn’t have hapened to a nicer person. Arsaib’s vote would have changed the result back if he’d swapped the pairs results

I didn’t expect that someone would have appeared in the last 2 minutes.Imagine he would have voted for Japan..That would have been the greatest ending ever.

“That would have been the greatest ending ever.”

obvious betting against China Jake? ;)

apursansar

The closest match ever! Congratulations to Myra whose team won although Japan had been leading throughout 98 % of the voting period. Kenji also made some of his most excellent selections for this round. Thanks to both managers.

Goddamn you Dimitris…I just said that it would be breathtaking.I would have said so too,if the result was the opposite. And if you mentioned,I gave my vote to China.

Dimitris Psachos

my votes didn’t help Kenji though….i still feel After the Rain was a major reason of that (proud and heavyweight nevertheless) loss.

Kenji

i always expected After the Rain to lose, with the result depending on the order of the pairings and so it proved. I went with my feelings and it shows Winter S.A.D is not good grounds for clinical trophy winning

I see this with a smiling and a crying eye. I votes 2 . 1 against Japan because of the films. But now I feel sad that the world greatest cinema country is not in the final.
Anyway, Kenji did a wonderful job and was one of the managers who introduced in far away ages of japanese cinema.
And for my side even lost by votes, HUMANITY AND PAPERBALOONS was with quite a distance my favorite film in this match.

Well, I’m glad I watched the three Japanese films and very happy to have discovered After the Rain which I enjoyed for its mood and the narrative as well as filmic quality. As for In the Mood for Love, I had trouble downloading it and watched it in Italian (some of which I was able to follow) on youtube, reading up on Wikipedia (to compensate for the language barrier) and thought it was sophisticated like Monica Vitti’s film (l’eclisse) but went with Humanity and Paper Balloons for the wealth of information on social and family dynamics in medieval Japan and for the balance the film achieved despite the complex plot.

RESULT

CHINA 2 JAPAN 1

Scenes of City Life 6 Sound of the Mountain 13

i’m glad Kenji played it rough because Myra did too but it seems Kar Wai got lucky this time after all the bashing of the first rounds!!!!!

but i don’t think it matters that “that the world greatest cinema country is not in the final” won’t appear in the final after all: Kenji started being bolder in the later rounds and it would be great now to see whether he or another manager become even more bolder in the next WC.

besides, there is no greatest cinematic country in the world.

Myra…this is a fantastic win, who would have thought you could pull this off against the Japan Juggernaut.
By the way, greak work Kenji.

Kim Packard

Kenji, which films did you have in mind for the finals if Japan had passed?

Myra

But, but… @ _ @

I didn’t expect this! You deserved to win kenji! :(

Kenji

Kim, see the result thread for my final choices and films considered.

Myra, there you are, i told you didn’t i you would win 2-1 with the match hinging on the middle pairing; i was confident Sound of the Mountain would win and thought In the Mood for Love would prove just too strong for Humanity (fools who said Wong isn’t liked on auteurs might have put you off; In the Mood for Love was top film of the decade in the auteurs poll earlier this year!) The luck was how the pairings were drawn; i thought Myra won’t pick In the Mood for Love first up, no it’ll be second or third and i wanted After the Rain to be against it, thinking i’d then win the other 2. Such is life. And so, China march on, what a great manager! You kept faith with your favourite film for when it mattered and the rest is history..
