THE AUTEURS WORLD CUP 2009 : GROUP STAGE VOTING

We are now well into the 3rd round of group matches, with 38 of 48 group matches already played. New participants are still most welcome and allowed to vote in the following match-ups.

On this thread, voting will be on the 5th match from Group 4, ITALY V CHILE. The other Group 4 match for voting over the next 24 hours, Taiwan v Austria, will be on another thread.

The voting period for this match lasts until 3 p.m GMT (0) on Monday 26th October, which means that users will have 24 hours (additional time, as a weekend match) in order to publish their votes. The world map which lists all current time zones can be found on www.worldtimezone.com, so that everyone can be up to date about how much time is left.

After the voting period for matches 5 and 6 of Group 4 is over the votes will be counted and the results published, before the next pair of group matches kick off. When the last 16 group matches are completed, we will be on to the knock-out stages, with 2 teams qualifying from each group. The whole competition will finish in December..

We don’t know if we will be having the long promised special world cup section, but we are now into the second half of matches anyway.

Each user can vote on any line-up of each match as long as he/she has watched both films that are lined-up against each other. An explanation for the preference in each case would be greatly appreciated, as provided by most voters in the previous matches. You can vote on any single pairing; you do not have to vote on all 3 pairings of a match. Team managers are not allowed to vote on matches in their own group. The voting should be handled like this:

Film A 1 (or 0) – Film B 0 (or 1)

Film C 0 (or 1) – Film D 1 (or 0)

Film E 1 (or 0) – Film F 0 (or 1)

Please mark the winning film/score in large or heavy print. You can give your explanatory statements either after each vote or after all 3 votes.

The match you´re going to vote for on this thread is

ITALY v CHILE
1.Amarcord (Fellini) v Machuca (Wood)
2.The Dreamers (Bertolucci) v Comedy of Innocence (Ruiz)
3.L’Eclisse/Eclipse (Antonioni) v The Moon in the Mirror/La Luna en el Espejo (Silvano Caiozzi)

I liked Machuca even more than La buena vida, but still this was an easy choice.

Amarcord 0 – MACHUCA 1

This was an easy choice. I just gave it a try to watch MACHUCA and this film conquered unexpected my heart. Si it is less important how much less I care about Amarcord, because MACHUCA touched me on several levels. I saw it without subs, but just at the beginning the information Chile 1973 already hooked me when the film takes place and about what the film will be telling. Such experiences happen seldom to me, but I didn´t feel much lack because of not understanding spanish. The film went under my skin and into my bones. What a discovery!

The Dreamers (Bertolucci) 0 – Comedy of Innocence (Ruiz) 1

Comedy of Innocence is one of my favorite Ruiz, but I though it was a French film, not a Chilean one.
I excpected Drew to come here and vote for The Dreamers haha.

Too bad I can’t vote for L’Eclisse, haven’t seen the film against it.

Rudiger,i’m really surprised this film lacks of English subtitles in your area,it really is a moving and extraordinary film about the Pinochet era and turmoil,it had a limited release here in Greece but once the Greek DVD version came out,i instantly grabbed it and that’s how i discovered Andres Wood, and that’s why i was struggling to watch Buena Vida and Historias de Fútbol :)
maybe if you search any subtitle databases, torrents?

p.s.: did we start early or what?

@Dimitris
as much as I tried the You Tube channel didn´t offer subs, but like I mentioned – it didn´t bother me a lot. Anyway, this film is able on DVD in Uk and I will give it to myself as a pre-christmas gift.

1.Amarcord 0 – Machuca 1
Machuca was a very moving film. One of the best films about childhood, coupled with a realistic look at how political instability affects different classes of people dofferently. A very accompplsihed film. I actually bought this film – it’s on Artificial Eye in the UK.

To everyone who has yet to vote, let me just say this:

Myra

1. Amarcord 1 – Machuca 0
Machuca was a worthy contender, but this is one of my favourite Fellinis. I love how he blended autobiographical content with history, and topped it with comedic extravagance. What a wild cast. Plus, who can forget the lady with the big… ahem.

2. The Dreamers 0 – Comedy of Innocence 1
I unfortunately was only really for the homages and references in The Dreamers. Melville’s (or rather, Cocteau’s) Les Enfants Terribles came to mind in terms of the interrelationship between the three characters. Ruiz’s film is far from a favourite as well, but its psychological aspect was more intriguing, even if I found it to be rather clumsy in suspense. (Josh, it would have been more enticing for me if you’d posted a picture of Louis Garrel.)

3. L’Eclisse 1 – The Moon in the Mirror 0
One of Antonioni’s best.

Grey Daisies; ah, we hadn’t thought of that, eligibility to vote on own group when already eliminated. Will get back to you, maybe need to consult on another thread

Myra

Along the same vein Kenji, can Blue and I vote in the upcoming Poland vs. Turkey match because they’ve both been eliminated?

Joe Arthaus

I am very sorry to have to completely skip this vote as I didn’t see any of the Chilean films. The two that were streaming – Machuca and The Moon in the Mirror – seemed far too dialogue dependent to watch without English subs. I understand others who can watch them without, but I didn’t think I could fairly evaluate them myself. Comedy of Innocence sounded intriguing when I read up on it, and reminded me of the plot to the Nicole Kidman’ vehicle Birth – a film almost no one seems to have seen. Birth also deals with a young boy who claims to be someone else who has died. Interesting film and I would have liked to see the Chilean take on it.

I have seen all the Italian films, though, so this is really disappointing. L’eclisse is now just about my favorite Antonioni with its brilliant end scene alone putting it past almost any film of its period. Amarcord was a welcome relief for me, as a Fellini fan, because it seemed to be a return to form for him – although its been awhile since I have seen the film. The Dreamers I have commented on elsewhere. It is by no means up to Bertolucci’s earlier high standrds, but was still fascinating to watch, as it certainly was a return for him to a more intimate (and I use this term in its fullest meaning!) type of cinema. Inspite of my own criticisms of this film, I find it superior to most contemporary films out there, inspite of its flaws. It is also a film that uses the term cinephile as a term of respect. Gotta love that – and the charming Ms. Green. I am glad to have seen it now, thanks to Drew’s pick of it.

Sorry to be wasting time here, and I hope that I don’t run into this complete roadblock again for other match-ups. Good luck to both teams and I hope others can vote for these pairings..

Amarcord 1 – Machuca 0

No contest! ‘Machuca’ is derivative to the point of plagiarism (the scene where the officer comes to search the schoolroom is taken almost shot-for-shot from Malle’s ‘Au revoir les enfants’). Amarcord may not be my favourite Fellini, but it’s both unusually simple and visually inventive as only Fellini knew how. All I need to remember is Ciccio up that tree, and it’s hard to beat. It’s all quirk and affection…

@ Grey Daisies, Myra: I was gonna say no problem but there would be a problem if placing in the group would still be affected. Now in the case of Austria’s group by voting on Chile’s match they could still give Austria a higher placing than Chile – in this case Grey Daisies (being honest and fair!) hasn’t done Austria any favours, but could have, and we have to be consistent. I’ll need to just check the situation, i don’t think it makes any difference to China or Africa what happens in the other match, but i’d need to come up with a consistent and properly worded ruling. Of course it’s good to have more participants

I’m having terrible internet connection trouble, may disappear again
_________

I admired Machuca for drawing attention to the horrendous Pinochet regime, how it changed the face of the country, and in a credible engaging way, not overly manipulative (a risk where kids are concerned)- though au Revoir les Enfants did come to my mind too, Amarcord is enjoyable but for me its personal anecdotal amusing frivolity just loses out to the more serious comment and commitment though there is something in common in the backdrop of political changes and Fellini certainly has some wider cutting points to make etc. I’m not really a great fan

Comedy of Innocence is far from best Ruiz but i didn’t think much of The Dreamers, curiously anaemic and unerotic, lacking the excitement and i imagine heady atmosphere of the setting and events. (An aside, i’ve heard the homo-eroticism is toned down from the original or reality)

Unerotic? Kenji, I think you must have put in Dreamscape by accident.

Kenji

Grey Daisies, it seems if Chile lose 3-0 and Austria win 3-0 you would come above Chile on goal difference, so i don’t think i can allow you to vote on that match- unless we then opened matches up for managers to vote against their own teams! But i think it should be ok where it makes no difference to the manager’s own result or placing, which may be the case in a couple of groups.

Kenji

Josh i simply didn’t find it erotic, even a pretty young lady in a state of undress left something to be desired (er well she perked my interest but the interactions could have been so much more sexy), and i didn’t find Last Tango in Paris erotic, both felt cold to me, but i did find Sheltering Sky more so (must be the voluptuous warmth). Philippe Garrel’s Regular Lovers covers similar ground to Dreamers superbly.

I’ve got to go back in where the net is likely to be lost- i’m on a park bench in the chilly windy dark

Grey Daisies and Myra feel free to consult with Apursansar, but i hope i’m clear enough; yes, vote where no possible effect on own placing or result, otherwise no.. We’ll have to be on the ball with goal difference etc if allowing such voting

bye for now, keep votes coming

early scores (not counting Grey Daisies):

Amarcord 4 Machuca 4
Dreamers 0 Comedy of Innocence 5
Eclipse 2 Moon in the Mirror 0

If Chile were to win they would qualify, and Italy would have to rely on Taiwan losing and then better goal difference. This is looking very interesting! Previous history between these 2 countries at football includes the infamous 1962 “battle of Santiago”

Amarcord 1 Machuca 0

Machuca was a great discovery, the mix of classes in the school, and the friendship being done very well, with the disruptions at regime change heartbreaking. (Did anyone notice that Woods interview on the DVD was in the same room as Hadzihalilovic’s on the innocence disc?) However the mix of Amarcord has greater resonance for me, and the score…

The Dreamers 0 Comedy of Innocence 1

The Dreamers might have won this if I hadn’t rewatched it, and didn’t find it nearly as charming. It just made me realise how much better Queen Christina or Bande A Part were.

L’Eclisse/Eclipse 1 The Moon in the Mirror/La Luna en el Espejo 0

Chubby, his paramour and his father were good competition, but L’Eclisse is one of those films with so many shots that infest my imagination: the pillar between them, the sports car fished out of the water, Monica Vitti’s legs amongst the tables and chairs. And a walking dog. How many dogs walking on two legs are there in cinema? It Rains On Our Love, here, and where else?

I think you´re right, Kenji. We shouldn´t allow votes that could affect the team´s position in the final group table. Grey Daisies was of course honest and his vote rather affected his own team, but I guess that we have to be consequent in order to not face more questionable exceptions in the following matches.

Kenji

Ok then. But that means managers in Group 8 can vote on the other matches they’re not in, and we can see if any other groups have similar situation. Vote against self interest like Grey Daisies’ is honest, but even allowing managers to vote against their own teams shouldn’t be allowed; in the group stages it could be done deviously to come runner up in a group instead of winner, so as to avoid a certain team in the draw! And who knows what multi-million betting scams may be involved in this tournament!
