Raúl Ruiz is a Juggernaut!!
Interesting results here. Outside of the dismal showing for The Dreamers, the rest were very close – even the great L’eclisse just squeaked by – my, my. I am surprised so many were able to vote here, considering I couldn’t manage Machuca or Moon in the Mirror without subtitles. I guess others didn’t have that problem. Dreamers getting crushed is interesting. It seems that randy little threesome is really getting scolded for their very self-indulgant, bad behaviour; or maybe people didn’t like the send-ups of some favorite films; or perhaps the whole ‘cinephile’ reference was just too corny – I don’t know.
Drew – we now need you and Zachary to give us a good defense of this film – from your perspectives. Obviously, it worked for you – that’s why you chose it.
Dreamers is quite the film, might not be innovative Bertolucci but it’s actually much more enjoyable than one would think of,Garrel giving a carefree performance and the references were a welcoming addition…however…it ended up being against Raoul Ruiz and had there been Klimt there,Dreamers would be a definite winner, but Ruiz hasn’t made lots of misfires,so it would have to be something like 1900 or even Last Emperor (speaking of English language) to beat Ruiz..
well, i’d vote for several by Bertolucci v Comedy of Innocence; Sheltering Sky, The Conformist, Spider’s Stratagem, 1900, The Last Emperor, maybe Besieged, and i reckon i’d appreciate Before the Revolution a lot more now… I do think it was partly a thumbs down for Dreamers, i feel for Drew who will be very disappointed, as it’s among his faves. Gilbert Adair is an excellent, some might say quite snobbish, writer on films (i love his book Flickers) so he’d be another who might be cheesed off with the response here.
“The Dreamers 0 – Comedy of Innocence 13
Isn’t that a new record, beating out all of those 12-0 matches? I remember Team Africa was close with Yeelen (13 votes), but didn’t quite make it because of 1 vote for the opponent."
@ Myra, yes, Team Africa won 14-1 with Yeelen vs Europa, Europa. And Yeelen had much tougher competition—Europa Europa is Citizen Kane compared to the Dreamers.
@ Drew, I kid, I kid. I love you like the little redheaded stepbrother I never had. Congratulations, by the way. You made great selections overall. :)
I really don’t understand why as soon as Fellini leaves realism behind he’s considered to have sold out. His unpredictable imagination is really much harder to come to terms with, for a ‘conventional’ audience, than the gently quirky humanism of ‘Cabiria’ (which I love, don’t get me wrong) or the social satire/portraiture in ‘La Dolce Vita’. If anything, ‘Amarcord’ is a little disappointing because it’s something of a compromise, but it seems to me to be honest. Even under Fascism political violence doesn’t define every moment of life, and especially not every moment of a teenager’s life. It’s not that he ignores it – remember the scene where his father is dragged into the commissariat. But he’s not making a film ‘about Fascism’, he’s making a film about being a teenager in a small town in Italy in the 20s/30s (don’t know why I wrote 1922, apologies Federico I know you’re not that old…).Considering that he was a militantly non-political animal as an adult – way too much so if you ask me – he’s fairly trenchant when the subject arises.
I could do without the harem scene, but other than that, I claim it a great film. And imagination is vital, and frankly lacking in ‘Machuca’.
And no, I’m not going to defend ‘Città delle donne’ …
I set a record!!!
Yessssss
Hi there. just new here but have to give at least one vote
Amacord 1 – 0 Machuca
Machuca is a really good movie, however even if it is just because of one of the funniest movie scenes ever (and I have to admit that I really do not like comedies at all) there is no other way than for amacord winning the match : the scene on the tree, when this guy is shouting and shouting that he wants a woman and how he finally gets down is so incredibly funny…..enough to win!!
Thanks very much as a new voter; this match sadly has ended (3pm GMT is final whistle), Italy scraped through, R.T,F, but the 2 current matches on are UK v Australia, India v Caucasus in group 6. then tomorrow we will have group 7 matches kicking off. Always good to have new participants. Last group matches in 2 days time. Then we break for selections and viewing before the last 16 knockout matches
Ali, i’m all for 8 1/2 and Fellini’s imagination at his best (more so than the earlier neo-realism), wouldn’t call that a sell-out, but just think that was his peak.
The biggest winning margin by a film was achieved by Rules of the Game. I’ve asked Law to come up with updated stats and records. Yeelen beating Europa Europa so easily was a fantastic performance.
Dimitris Psachos
i’m actually shocked that Italy passed after all (!!!!)
nothing against Drew of course but oh boy,Chile compiled a really powerful team for that match..and yet lost….
p.s.: i’d definitely vote for Bertolucci had there been Last Emperor instead of Dreamers…
