If my dog was a vote it’d have to be a draw, but no, he’s just a dog in a jumper, wondering what’s going on.
(I haven’t seen ‘The Black House’, nor the Hallström for years – can’t comment.)
I realized that a streaming link has now been posted to Fucking Amal on Christine’s profile, so I was able to watch if for the vote, afterall.
Fucking Amal 0 – Taste of Cherry 1
Girls and kids were great in Fucking Amal, but I feel a bit too old for this film. As I said above, this favorite Kiarostami film has all his signature touches – the car, the contrast between village/city, the undercurrents of life in modern Iran conflicting with old values and culture, the realistic dialogue and documentary feel, and a story that just gets more interesting as we progress. Should be required viewing for any potential suicides out there. Thought about this when viewing one of the poignant scenes in Fucking Amal. Still, an easy win for Taste of Cherry – a beautiful, subtle film. So, as predicted, this now gives a vote to Iran for me.
Here are the current scores including Joe Arthaus´ vote:
Fucking Amal 9 Taste of Cherry 11
Winter Light 10 The Circle 5
My Life as a Dog 7 The House is Black 9
Winter Light 1 The Circle 0
Fucking Amal 0 v Taste of Cherry 1
Fucking Amal v Taste of Cherry 1
Winter Light v The Circle 1
My Life as a Dog v The House is Black 1
Again, six fine choices, but I felt more connected to the Iranian selections than the Swedish ones so I had to give them my votes even though the pairings were all close. I can’t say more at the moment since I’m trying to finish up watching the last couple of films for tomorrows match.
Fucking Amal 0 – Taste of Cherry 1
Even if I do not like the last incongruous scene
Winter Light 1 – The Circle 0
Even if Bergman is not a Pantheon filmmaker for me
My Life as a Dog 1 – The House is Black 0
Even if that’s not my favourite Hallström
Fucking Amal- 1, Taste of Cherry- 0
One of the greatest films I have ever seen. Not enough good things to say about both, but Moodyson’s film is perfect
Winter Light- 0, The Circle 1
Very close, but ‘Winter Light’ just isn’t among my favorite Bergmans, and ‘The Circle’ is beyond fantastic
My Life as a Dog- 1, The House is Black- 0
This match can still go either way. Current scores:
Fucking Amal 10 Taste of Cherry 14
Winter Light 12 The Circle 7
My Life as a Dog 9 The House is Black 10
these pairings were harder than i first thought, a bit of back-n-forth … just a hint of doubt … but … the 3 films i chose i felt voiced important sociological concerns that needed to be raised at the time (and are still very much relevent/engaging today) …
Fucking Amal (1) v Taste of Cherry (0)
Winter Light (0) v The Circle (1)
My Life as a Dog (0) v The House is Black (1)

i still don’t understand how a Bergman’s work beats a decade’s perfection…
Fucking Åmål 1 – Ta’m e Guilass 0
5/5 – 5/5
Nattvardsgästerna 0 – Dayereh 1
4,5/5 – 5/5
Mitt Liv Som Hund 0 – Khaneh Siah Ast 1
4 or 4,5/5 – 5/5
there isn’t much to say here, other than pointing out i was delighted to actually admire a Hallstrom film for the first time!!!much like with Beresford,Hallstrom’s Hollywood career was mostly justifiable by Gilbert Grape and i am being mild not criticizing it as a something close to melo.but it wasn’t enough at the moment like with Breaker Morant to get my vote,so that dame poetess captures my heart in her single film, that captivity which actors/actresses turned directors don’t always achieve…
i could have given it to Kiarostami once again, even so…Amal is a brilliant endorsement of queer film/romantic coming-of-age excluding mushy elements….and had there been Silence there, the Bergman-Panahi match would be more difficult to consider, and yet…the panoramic trip of all the girls’ adventures was quickly became an instant favorite when i first saq it a couple of years after its release…
Well, I disagree with you on that one. In my opinion is “Winter Light” a lifetime´s perfection, Bergman´s most personal and minimalist work and as he said himself the only film he ever made that he considers flawless. When I first watched it didn´t I appreciate it that much, but I rewatched it and came to think that it´s alongside the best depictions of man´s condition on earth ever made, and although I consider “The Circle” a masterpiece didn´t I have to doubt a second which film to choose. It must also be noted that Sven Nykvist´s inventive use of natural light has never been more accomplished than in this film, it´s most likely his greatest achievement as a cinematographer.
this may also have to do with the fact i’m closer to a director’s first and middle work, for instance…i have a great affection towards Phantom of Liberty by Bunuel, and yet,if i had to choose between a period of his filmography,i wouldn’t hesitate even picking Nazarin against Phamtom, even Tristana coudln’t beat Nazarin’s a-religious sentiment, ironically,Tristana penetrates sexuality vs piety a lot more, and yet,i’d still take the more “realistic” factor..
same goes for Bergman i think :)
as an overall trilogy,it’s quite stellar but individually, the 60’s Bergman is Persona for my part…
VOTING CLOSED – RESULTS ARE GOING TO BE PUBLISHED SOON
The House is Black 1 My Life as a Dog 0
Easy vote for me. Sorry, I’m not fond of My Life as a Dog. I’m going to watch Farrokhzad’s film again today. It’s been a few months since I last saw it.
Sorry, Paul. This time can´t your vote be included since the voting period was already past. But it wouldn´t have changed the result since “The House is Black” won the final pairing.

Anthony Quinn was the son of a bitch cos he came from Chihuahua
The editing in the House is Black is marvellous, and it doesn’t wallow in sickly sentiment.
I’m off to bed, keep the votes coming. Nos da.
