Pirates is a guilty pleasure, don’t tell anyone ;)
considering he made Bitter Moon, the rest are tolerable from the 90’s, including Ninth Gate.
I’ve lost all respect for you now ;)
spoke the Meg Ryan fanboy :P
Pwn
I like Pirates as well and I don’t even feel guilty about it.
Oh, I did forget about Why? too. Which many consider to be as bad as anything he’s done, although Ehrenstein thinks it’s his best film.
Greg, laugh all you want but it’s one of the few times i’ll agree with Doctor Ehrenstein :P
(though my expression would be one of his best, i like the plural number, hehe)
See, this is when these kinds of threads just go off the rails.
In summary:
Truffaut’s THE GREEN ROOM
Kubrick’s EYES WIDE SHUT
Allen’s ANOTHER WOMAN
Fellini’s JULIET OF THE SPIRITS
Sturges’ ICE STATION ZEBRA
Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS
and Spielberg’s SCHINDLER’S LIST
have all been trashed. Two, maybe four, of those are authentic masterpieces, and the remainders are very fine films. I’m hoping these titles are all showing up for shock value. If not, I’d say those nominating them need to hone their analytical skills a little more.
Vulgarity is the rule. Never the exception.
I’d love to see Ermanno Olmi’s worst films.
CHRISTOPHER: i love Juliet and the Spirits myself, but i can understand why opinions are mixed. ‘Another Woman’ is decent IMO. nothing special, but not exactly terrible either.
As for Schindler’s LIst, i’d argue the ‘honing of analytical skills’ explains why so many people hate it.
Schindler’s List Spielberg’s worst? you’ve obviously not seen War of the Worlds nor Terminal…
Or The Color Purple. Or Jurassic Park. I know you love the latter, D, but take away the effects and that’s a ScyFy movie.
Terminal is just sort of mediocre, but found it watchable (once) – Schindler’s list is a needlessly cheesy and exploitative piece of crap (imo) and stands out far more.
Hey now, there’s no need to be bringing the lovely Ms. Ryan into this. Her work is sadly underrated by you heathens, but I’ll let that slide…
I was working at a theater when Pirates came out and I had to watch it, or parts of it everyday for the couple of weeks it was in theaters and I couldn’t wait for it to leave. I wanted to like it, I really did, but nope, nothing about it pleased me at all. I can handle ham, hell, I dig Robert Newton’s Long John Silver, but Matthau in this one, ugh. But that’s almost beside the point, even if you find Pirates enjoyable, I have a hard time seeing how it’s better than any of Polanksi’s other films except for possibly Ninth Gate which was rather too uninspired, to my taste, to be seen as anything other than moderately successful.
Oh, and sign me up for Hook as Spielberg’s worst, narrowly edging out The Color Purple.
yeah, Jurassic is simplistic but how many times a year you see a decent Hollywood adventure? ;)
oh sure, now Matthau takes the blame :P
Not a big fan of The Color Purple but would still easily rank it over E.T. and Jaws.
i’d rather take a holocaust exploitative film like Schindler instead of a borderline racist film like Terminal was.
Color Purple is also racist compared to E.T. but at least E.T. doesn’t bastardize a certain community (except children but that’s another subject to handle, hahaha)
Oh, I forgot Hook.
{shudder}
And I love ET, so call me a sentimental nostalgist if you will, but I ain’t giving that one up.
and why no love for Green Room? has anyone seen the last two Doinel features? Green Room is a saint compared to them!!!!
Max Mon Amour by Nagisa Oshima takes this down.
chimp hater.
@ Greg,
Actually some very smart people have argued that it’s some kind of Bunuel-esque genius. I don’t know, man… I just have that image of when they strap him on top of their car on an outing.
And speaking of monkeys, what about Dimitris’ favorite Eastwood and Space Cowboys?
Wait a minute, there are monkeys in that movie?
Moved to top of Q.
dude, Space Cowboys seriously blows!!!! i don’t know which is worst, some Methuselahs in a space shuttle or an ex-veteran playing John Wayne against some Korean gangs :P
Actually, I don’t even know what to think about Max I saw it on cable years and years ago before I really knew much about Oshima and let’s just say I was somewhat taken aback by it. Almost too strange to really dislike for me, but I can’t really support it either, not without seeing it again anyway.
John Carpenter – The Thing
Coens – Fargo (liked everything else I’ve seen from them though)
yeah, Max really confused me as well, because they’re so straight-faced about the whole thing in the film. And you sense no tongue-in-cheek or ironic tendencies whatsoever. Like no one seems to notice the absurdity of the situation.
greg x
Huh? Polanski made Pirates. Why is there even a discussion about his worst film after that fiasco?
