Pulp Fiction, but really I don’t mind as long as they can discuss why and give examples.
If someone is into films they should be able to discuss, without hyperbole, the films they like and why and the films they dislike and why.
In everything, “because” is not an answer.
When people say “I love Tim Burton” and I ask ‘why’ and they say “cause he’s awesome” and I say ‘awesome isn’t a reason’ and they say “his visuals are crazy” and I say ‘so are Fellini’s, DO YOU KNOW WHO THAT IS?’ and they say “this date is over” and I go home and watch 8 1/2.
Tim Burton is a whore for Hot Topic, Disney, and any “Alternative” brand. For more evidence, see: Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands action figures, and Corpse Bride.
Anthony, that can’t be so bad. At least you know Claudia Cardinale awaits you at home.
@Dequinix
AND Marcello Mastroianni. How can I look back? :)
Much worse than any other kind of film watcher is that one self-proclaimed “film expert” that watches Academy Award nominated/Critically acclaimed films almost exclusively and passes that off as some kind of informed taste. Those that don’t seem to have any real curiosity and strive for some kind of “safe” taste are by far the most cringe-worthy.
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen.
Moderated
there are so many modern films that make me cringe when people rave about them- not some snse of snobbery just think the films are dreadfully cringeworthy
i would start probably contentiously with the Godfather triolgy- because despite being very well acted are just awful films glorifying violence
Da Vinci Code, new Batman’s, popeye arghhhh
others such as titanic, ET, oh so many inm fact most of the highly touted modern films made me cringe and dig deep into polite conversation in order not to have to explain myself yet again for not being apart of their world and its limitations – i’m happy with my own limitations -
Popeye?!? Who says that is a outstanding movie? What circles do you run in that Popeye comes up often enough to warrant disgust over its mention? :)
Someone said cringing at Netflix ratings. I try to avoid looking at user reviews of movies, but sometimes I get a good laugh when peple just have zero clue what they are talking about.
The Boondock Saints. I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me.
Fight Club and Donnie Darko spring to mind.
Saw and Fargo
Across the Universe
PAY IT FORWARD. Even at the tender age of 9…I wanted to shoot myself in the face.
Well, my ex-husband loves RUDY. I believe that’s one of the reasons he’s my ex.
Titanic.
Crash. Anything by Tim Burton. Yes, Boondock Saints.
2012. I really get pissed of when people like this crap.
500 days of summer
hannah takes the stairs
Million Dollar Baby
Tim Burton’s films (especially Alice in Wonderland!!!!)
Avatar
500 days of summer (and any wannabe “indie” s*** like it… …. matter of fact, almost anything with zooey deschanel in it)
Garden State (goes in the same category with 500 days of summer. this minimalistic, sad for the sake of being sad trend.. with bad acting on top of it.)
Up. I don’t understand how anyone over the age of 12 can like it.
Anything by Tyler Perry. I know far too many people that think he’s a genius. Funny thing, none of them are white.
I don’t cringe when people tell me they love a film that I don’t like, but then I don’t think my taste is superior to theirs (or anyone else’s)

I think this is a phase everyone goes through at some point when they’re still in high school/early college, but if someone is truly passionate about film, they will grow up and move past this.

It’s not always easy to explain why someone loves a film. Some people are very right-brained about it and will have trouble putting their thoughts on a film into words. There’s nothing wrong with that. Not everyone has to provide an academic essay on their opinion of every single film they have ever seen.
crash (2004), american beauty, the truman show, inglorious basterds, good will hunting, hustle & flow, the departed, scarface, precious (or any other tyler-perry related movie), the legend of bagger vance (or any other ‘magical/helpful negro’ movie for that matter: the green mile, driving miss daisy, black snake moan, etc)
Christian Depken
Avatar, Boondock Saints, Transformers and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek.
I think Avatar and Star Trek have their positive qualities, but everyone who talks film with me lauds them as extraordinary. And they’re not.
Also, this may be hypocrisy, because it’s one of my favorite films; but I’m so sick of people who don’t appreciate A Clockwork Orange blathering on about how “edgy” it is. No mention of the set design, music, acting, any of that. But there’s rape, so it’s good!
Same for Fight Club.
