Action Sequence: Opening sequence for “Saving Private Ryan”.
Fight Sequence: Fist of Legend (Jet Li taking on the Japanese martial arts students) and one for nostalgia sake: Rocky IV – Rocky final round – I’ve never seen an audience in theater get up on their feet all at once screaming like it was like a real boxing match
Chase Sequence: Bullit, French Connection and Ronin (those three are my favorites)
Always liked the fist fight between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David in John Carpenter’s 1988 surprise hit “They Live”. “PUT ’EM ON”, referring to the sunglasses.
Favorite action sequence…
with swords, the end of The Sword of Doom.
with fists, the final the final fight at the end of Contour a film I’ve ranted and raved about on this site. Watch it here:

with guns, the hotel shoot out in No Country for Old Men.
with cars,the Mona Lisa Overdrive sequence (as it is dubbed on the soundtrack and chapter selection, most likely as an homage to William Gibson) in The Matrix Reloaded.

The only way that could be improved on:

Ronin wins for car chase scene
They Live wins for absolutely weird and memorable alley punching match
edit: just saw that Bostonlula posted the fight as well….so classic. :)
the one in all about steve.
action sequences I would happily (re)watch would have to include
the street gun fight from Heat;
the final police assault in Leon;
the good, the bad, the ugly (any gun fight from that)
as for fight sequences:
Kung Fu Hustle’s community battle;
Van Damme in Blood Sport
The no holds barred fight (staples and all) in The Wrestler
chase sequences … simple The Duel best chase ever …
Ray said, “with guns, the hotel shoot out in No Country for Old Men.”
Wait, the shoot out scene is not shown, right?
The highway chase sequence in The Matrix: Reloaded is always thrilling.
Also the showdown between Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Action – Any random scene chosen from Raiders of the Lost Ark
Fight – Boxing in Raging Bull
Chase – Through the sewers in The Third Man
Nice call ^
Fight- Oldboy or Harakiri. I’ve yet to decide which one is better
Chase- The Third Man
The fight in the sauna in “Eastern Promises.”
The scene in Transporter 3 where Jason Statham chases those guys on his motherfucken bike! <3
@Jazzaloha
“Ray said, “with guns, the hotel shoot out in No Country for Old Men.”
Wait, the shoot out scene is not shown, right?"
I was talking about the one in the middle of the movie. It is probably one of the most thrilling shoot-outs I’ve seen in a movie because of its lack of a distracting soundtrack. By properly establishing the characters, making great use of ambient sound and suspense.
It really should inspire more action movies to make good use of suspense.
i also love the final showdown in a bittersweet life
Shoot out in scarface, the wild bunch, end of Godfather, hardboiled, the killer.
The chase in Apocalypto.
Everything in Kill Bill I.
Ray,
I can’t picture the scene at all for some reason. I do know there were some thrilling/tense moments in that film.
Other great chase sequences:
To Live and Die in LA has a really nice one. There’s a part of it where the cars are going pretty slow, while they’re weaving through a maze of trucks.
Italian Job The mini-coopers in the subway is one of the better chase sequences of recent films.
Empire Strikes Back—the Falcon in the asteroid belt.
Waterworld Not a great movie, but the chase sequences are pretty exciting in this one.
French Connection Someone must have mentioned this one. What’s interesting about this one is that the scene involves a car chasing not another car, but a man in a train. Popeye Doyle is trying to beat the train, which adds a twist.
only a few mentioned Oldboy’s hallway fight scene which was amazing, to say the least.
for a chase i’d go with the french connection because i can’t think of anything else.
Any car chase directed by Friedkin (The French Connection, The Hunted, Jade, To Live and Die in L.A. ) or Frankenheimer (Ronin, Ambush, does Grand Prix count…?) is good with me.
Spielberg is quite good at it too; the chase through the University in Crystal Skull was a major highlight in a rather disappointing movie, but I’m thinking more the truck scene in Raiders, the mine cars in Temple and the planes in Last Crusade. Reportedly he is huge fan of the chase in Castle of Cagliostro, so I’m hoping for something along those lines (or of that caliber) to be in Tintin.
R.S.
Spielberg is great at directing and constructing action sequences.
The car chase in Cagliostro is a good one to mention.
I’d say one of the best and still the most interesting action/chase sequences is the bulk of Buster Keaton’s “The General” – no fancy special effects, no stunt pros, just Buster and the actors and some trains.
It makes it more astonishing when you consider there’s no trickery involved in the stunts.
As far as chase scenes go, the second half of Apocalypto is quite accomplished.
I’m a fan of the movie as a whole, too.

Good call, Randy.
RS and others who have commented on Apocalypto. You guys have piqued my interest. I’m going to try and see the film.
The foot chases in SE7EN and POINT BREAK. The finale in ROAD WARRIOR. Everything in DRUNKEN MASTER 2 and most of SORCERER. And I second Bostonluna about the incredible, grueling, exhausting, sloppy fist-fight in THEY LIVE. Insane.
-From russia with love fight between red grant and James Bond.
-the chase from the french connection.
-the miami airport battle/chase in casino royale
rishi goswami
