Well, that last part’s not true, but I’ve been thinking of buying a new yo-yo.

I’m not sure what we’re supposed to be doing here. But I’ll play along and see what happens.

I second that Bobby. I’ve expanded my base quite a bit through suggestions/conversations from this site. Definitely received more than I’ve given.

In my retirement this site has been a life saver for me except for the steaming piles on shit dumped on this site a few days ago—that was truly over the top in my life experiences so far!

Tis a great site, or potentially great. I’ve been here for several months, and went dormant for 2 or 3 – at the time I felt that the forum discussions were staring to go ‘round and ’round in circles, so I opted for what became a long-ish break, and a few folks I’d gotten into some interesting discussions with emailed, and dragged me back onto the site, which has been a good thing. There are certainly opinions here that I find very, very interesting, and those folks (and their opinions) keep me on my toes: I try to be as thoughful as possible when I’m here.

Thus I was also dismayed to return to the site just as it began to get hit by troll attacks and IMDBisms, but the site is run by folks who are engaged and enthused, and I expect those issues will run their due course. It’s a lot more fun than the criterion forums, one of which seems to be nothing but people posting pics of their DVD collections and asking “Am I cool now?”; the other of which is informative if you can wade through the snark and death-defying levels of ego. There’s a fine balance of smart and fun here, which is where it ought to be.

I don’t mind the lists. This is the internet. Lists will get made.

Lists are okay, but at least half of the lists and the vs. threads are duplicates, and unnecessarily take up space and more importantly inadvertently bury previous discussions that, reading the full thread of which, may prove to be enlightening.

I’ve found sooo much by going back into previous threads (Wild Strawberries, Inland Empire, Tarkovsky, Cold Kubrick) and adding to the discussion rather than needlessly creating a parallel thread is much more worthwhile.

I think I’ve officially become a thread-fascist. Do I need to be overthrown, or is this a grassroots movement?

Joined this site in Spring ‘08 via Facebook’s backdoor.
Things have changed tremendously. Apparently, it’ll get better, but it won’t be what it was.
Yet, three accounts later, I’m still here despite my qualms.
’S my cinematic crack.

Continue to be a thread-fascist, Josh, somebody’s got to do it. I’ve actually started going back to old threads, too, and I even brought one back to life (coincidentally about falling asleep) just as test, and couple more people started responding to it. Our good friend Anonymity actually referred me to this thread, it’s a very good read.
And sometimes I find some gems like Col. Dax’s story of a girl he once knew who loved penguins. Cracking stuff.

My experiences on this site have been, to say the least, mixed. I stumbled across this site while I was prepping for surgery (I’m fine) and had high hopes that it would pep me up during my convalescence (the truth is I was searching for one of Rachael Ray’s 30-minute meal recipes when, through a happy accident only the internet seems to provide, I came upon this site. Loving movies and people, I jumped head first into this). As Mussolini once said, I think I made a big mistake.

Much to my chagrin this has not, thus far, been a happy experience. I’ve offered up my opinions on films and have been uniformally lambasted. Yes, I am a fan of the film Miss Congeniality and though I realize it does not fall into the (very) small bucket of esoterica that seems to be discussed on this site, I would have thought you all would have welcomed me with open arms (not literally as I’ve battled aphephobia most of my life) but that simply has not been the case. One wag even suggested that I NOT return to this site and seek out a chat room on something called Yahoo.

What I fully anticipated to be a wonderful experience has instead turned quite ugly for me. In fact, I now find myself battling an addiction to prescription painkillers as a result (no worries…I’ll get this dreaded monkey off my back soon). I find myself now in league with other martyrs (Joan of Arc and James, the brother of Jesus quickly come to mind). This site has, as they say, chewed me up and spit me out.

That’s all for now. My male nurse Timothy quit two days ago and now I have to interview prospective replacements..we all know THAT can take a lot of time!

Agee, that’s the best post on Auteurs in quite a while—you cheered me up and what with all the real shit and obscene body parts flashing on this site I really needed your witty genteel discourse—every time I post on this site real shit hits the fan and disgusting body parts begin to follow—my advice: keep your head low and watch out for incoming excrement and the like— I think I better literally run while I have a chance to escape the incoming whatnot, but just so you know how I feel truthfully—at Auteurs Forum I feel like I’ve walked onto the set of a favorite movie Richard Lester’s rarely seen The Bed Sitting Room with all those grand now dead English actors slowly turning into funny objects after their nuclear Apocalypse—I would feel right at home if I knew my lines, but since I don’t, I’m suddenly sitting at a dinner table on a stage with a sold out theater crowd waiting to hear what Delphine Seyrig and I have to say in guess what movie—tell me some one and you’ll win a prize, but I better be running again for now because I’m suddenly in a steaming jungle with a lot incoming, and it’s not excrement this time, bud, but something much worse and dangerous in what movie—I give up—i’ve had enough of movie sets where I don’t know my lines—by far, the very worst nightmare for any one who loves cinema— this is simply THE AUTEURS, and Agee, you had it made before you returned because there’s a lot more than insults to endure this time.

I have been here for a little more than 6 months and been loving all that happens here.
This is one site that I visited most over all these months, it opened a door that ceased to exist once I came in.The stay here while learning, discussing, making lists or just goofing off, has been worthwhile thus far…

To the point Filmy Andy and I basically agree with you as always. What I don’t like on this site: I don’t like the insults and co so-called corrections from people who don’t know what they’re talking about— I appreciate any correction from any body if there’s a mistake in my post, but if you’re ignorant on the prevailing subject, don’t try to correct me—leave that job to the experts at Auteurs, and we do have many that will educate you in the right way very quickly. I practically live on this site and try not to say anything if I’m not knowledgeable on the particular subject—I feel that I have learned more than I’ve imparted on this site.

I find the forum a bit weak in that it’s just this big mishmash. No categories? No quoting. It’s more like a whole lotta comment threads than a forum.

Otherwise the site is awesome. The discussions, mostly intelligent, and the film info is solid. Lots of freebies. great site. weak forum.

This is aimed at nobody in particular so please do not take offense, but due to recent activity on this site I am finding it very difficult to trust anyone who has not taken the time to build a profile and join in on a few discussions before taking them seriously about anything. It’s unfortunate, I know, but I keep waiting for racist, offensive, and repulsive posts and pics to just start flying all over the place. Some of these little buggers are very persistent.
Parental neglect, or just plain stupidity? Some of it is downright evil! How does one sleep at night spewing such hatred?

Especially when their first few posts are kind of them being an ass.

It’s a little hard to take seriously sometimes, but the same is true of anything in and out of existence, so I guess I don’t mind.

Thank you Mr. DuBois…as someone I’m sure we’re both familiar with once said, “I’ve always counted on the kindness of strangers.” If only everyone on this site was so civil, it would be a lot more fun. I do think we need more Vivian Leighs and less Thelma Ritters. I feel at times that this site is indeed the Stanley Kowalski to my Blanche Dubois. My life since finding this site (which happened to collide with some surgery I had performed) has become like a Tennessee Williams play (minus the poetic squalor of course and with the added treat of the internet)….perhaps A Website Named Desire? Sweet Blog of Youth?

Agee/Blanche, from the Horse’s Mouth to my ears—by the way you’ll never know how much I appreciate your civility—you’re an extremely witty gentleman even if you call yourself Blanche- Some hard DuBois facts: I have her initials, I’m from same neighborhood of the real TN in Mississippi Delta, and my father’s sister born in 1903 was named Blanche Carmela, Ole TN took her given name and our surname—that’s the legend and its been printed as truth in MS Delta since day the play appeared on Broadway in late 1940’s—TN’s father was Episcopal rector in our town for very short time—he normally moved every 2- 5 yrs with his family before TN , mother. and sister ended up in St. Louis—no duration of stay ever any where in MS given father’s calling—my Blanche was bovine rustic lady with no talent for poetry and the finer things, not at all a pretender/ nymphomaniac—according to my father Radford I, she could/would fart in both the presence of the genteel at mass and the unwashed at the local junk joint—In college at Vanderbilt one of my English professors would occasionally call on Blanche and then turn red— in graduate school some couldn’t help themselves and would call me Blanche in jest—it never really bothered me—all DuBois families in MS Delta were related by blood, only 1 line—since my family did not know TN’s family well, he may have picked up his Blanche in New Orleans or later even In NYC in 1940’s—nevertheless, it’s been quite a burden for me and my family, but I’m the last living DuBois of my generation and of course Tennessee’s gone too, bless his soul,so who really cares? I do because I love my long dead aunt and my family. Agee, hang in there and I’m praying for your recovery. Some answers for my post above: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Apocalypse Now

Even though this site offers around six movies for free each month….it’s still free movies!

I watched Black Orpheus last Saturday and really enjoyed it. I doubt I’ll get to watch any more of the Cannes winners, but I look forward to what’s going to be available next month.

I’m really digging The Auteurs so far. My Timeout Film Guide (2005, 13th Edition) is my main cinema reference, and this site is a nice supplement with the discussions, and reading and sharing reviews of the movies. I never got involved in the discussion boards on IMDB or /film or wherever else, but I am definitely going to continue to do so here!

I don’t know of any site that is dedicated to preserve the dialogue necessary for arthouse films to survive other than The Auteurs. I think a lot of the people that join here are people who are relieved to find a network that allows smart and thoughtful discussion of their favorite films. I was. None of my friends care for the films that I love. So why should I talk to them about it?

I would love to hear from women more than we do? It’s nearly entirely male. I see Clarissa’s name on the threads, but where are the others?
